Guest guest
The key to using raw milk is the source. If it is a small farm it will be fine. People did not get sick from raw milk until dairy farming became big business instead of small clean farms where the cows were healthy. My family has used raw milk for years as well as MANY people I know and no one has ever gotten sick from it. Check out Mercola.com for info. on raw milk. There are many good things that pasteurization kills in the milk just like antibiotics kill good along with the bad. Also, the milk proteins are altered which can cause more milk allergies. Do your research and decide, don't just go by the milk industries scare tactics! -- [Norton AntiSpam] Re: can anyone recommend a good yogurt maker for the scd diet? > > also, can any kind of milk be used or is it better to use raw milk? It seems like the pastuerization process in most milk is not a good thing....is this right? > >
Guest guest
I'll second this. My mom grew up on a farm, and drank raw milk her entire life. It really doesn't matter when we get down to it because when making proper SCD yogurt, it must be heated to at least 180 degrees no matter if it is raw, pasturized, farm purchased, or grocery store purchased. But, I just wanted to throw in my agreement that people used to drink raw milk all the time with no problem. Guest guest
this site has good information about raw milk: http:// www.realmilk.com/what.html read below what is says about crohn's disease. are you sure that elaine says to pasteurize (heat to 180) RAW goat milk? that doesn't make any sense. raw, unpasteurized milk is much less dangerous than pasteurized, which no longer contains the beneficial bugs that keep the bad guys from proliferating. -silvia " Real Milk is not pasteurized. Pasteurization destroys enzymes, diminishes vitamin content, denatures fragile milk proteins, destroys vitamins C, B12 and B6, kills beneficial bacteria, promotes pathogens and is associated with allergies, increased tooth decay, colic in infants, growth problems in children, osteoporosis, arthritis, heart disease and cancer. Calves fed pasteurized milk do poorly and many die before maturity. Raw milk sours naturally but pasteurized milk turns putrid; processors must remove slime and pus from pasteurized milk by a process of centrifugal clarification. Inspection of dairy herds for disease is not required for pasteurized milk. Pasteurization was instituted in the 1920s to combat TB, infant diarrhea, undulant fever and other diseases caused by poor animal nutrition and dirty production methods. But times have changed and modern stainless steel tanks, milking machines, refrigerated trucks and inspection methods make pasteurization absolutely unnecessary for public protection. And pasteurization does not always kill the bacteria for e’s disease suspected of causing Crohn's disease in humans with which most confinement cows are infected. Much commercial milk is now ultra- pasteurized to get rid of heat-resistant bacteria and give it a longer shelf life. Ultra-pasteurization is a violent process that takes milk from a chilled temperature to above the boiling point in less than two seconds. Clean raw milk from certified healthy cows is available commercially in several states and may be bought directly from the farm in many more. (Sources are listed on www.realmilk.com.) Guest guest
<<are you sure that elaine says to pasteurize (heat to 180) RAW goat milk?>> Yes..... you absolutely MUST heat the milk (raw or otherwise.... but ESPECIALLY if raw) before adding starter and fermenting into yogurt. If you skipped this step, you would have other BAD bacteria competing.... and GROWING.... in the medium. The heating step is essential.... and it's purpose is to provide a sterile starting point for fermenting yogurt. Patti
Guest guest
i was just thinking too that there are only certain strains of bacteria that are desirable, right? not all the different types that are present in real milk. maybe this is another reason to kill all the bacteria in the beginning. anyway there might still be some benefit to using raw, because it won't be " ultra-pasteurized " , and then maybe some of the beneficial enzymes will be present. yes, i think the realmilk site is somehow related to the weston price site. thanks for bringing up this topic. it's really interesting to learn all this stuff. silvia > >> >> this site has good information about raw milk: http:// >> www.realmilk.com/what.html >> >> read below what is says about crohn's disease. are you sure that >> elaine says to pasteurize (heat to 180) RAW goat milk? that doesn't >> make any sense. raw, unpasteurized milk is much less dangerous than >> pasteurized, which no longer contains the beneficial bugs that keep >> the bad guys from proliferating. >> >> -silvia >> > Is this from of Weston-Price? > > From Elaine's website > > " SCD™ 24 HR yoghurt really is one of the most healthy foods you can > find and its > incredibly good value too. Guest guest
The real milk site is run by the Weston Price Foundation.
