Pink packets of " Sweet 'n Low " that sit on restaurant tables that we may have put in our coffee or tea at one time or another. Around for more than 100 years it is the oldest artificial sweetener, in 1977 the FDA required that all food containing Saccharin contain a warning label: " Use of this product may be hazardous to your health. This product contains saccharin, which has been determined to cause cancer in laboratory animals. " In a study conducted by the National Cancer Institute during 1978 and 1979, it was concluded that heavy users of Saccharin, and products containing it such as diet soda, could be at an increased risk of developing bladder cancer. " Heavy use " was defined as " two or more 8-ounce servings of a diet drink per day, " or " six or more servings of [packets of] sugar substitute per day. " Saccharin, used long-term, does not promote good health, but if you must use an artificial sweetener (for example, if you are a diabetic), please choose Saccharin products over popular Aspartame-containing ones (see below!). note: As of May 9th, 2000 Saccharin was removed from the National Toxicology Report on Carcinogens as a possible cancer-causing chemical. Guest guest
Why not try fresh lemonade? Fresh lemon juice in water.... add sweetener of your choice. I usually squeeze 1/4 of a lemon into about 10 oz of water. I use honey for my daughter... or sometimes saccharin. This is what she drinks every day, instead of any other type of fruit juice. Lime juice works really nicely, too. Patti Looking for a totally sugar free drink Looking for a beverage that would not stir up yeast. Guest guest
I can't imagine you are juicing veggies yet? We do ok with a few veggies and I dilute the fruit juice with it. This didn't come oevrnight however. It is a gradual process getting veggie juice at all in them. Guest guest
Yes, this seems like a good one. Just need to find some cheap lemons other than what is offered at Whole Foods. Way too expensive to make fresh lemonade everyday. Will try it, though! Patti wrote: Why not try fresh lemonade? Fresh lemon juice in water.... add sweetener of your choice. Guest guest
I know.... lemons have been so expensive! A single lemon is 99 cents at my grocery store.... but, oddly enough, a whole 2 lb. BAG of lemons in that same store (the last one I bought have seven lemons) is only $2.99. You might look for them that way. Sometimes, my store has limes cheaper than lemons. I think all citrus is probably going to spike way up in price due to the recent freezing weather, though. Patti Re: Looking for a totally sugar free drink Yes, this seems like a good one. Guest guest
Hi! I am new to the board and we have not yet started SCD but plan to in the next week or so. I am just reading the board messages to gather information. Never even thought about the sugars in juice - my son drinks ONLY water or water w/some organic pom concentrate in it. I started mixing in freshly juiced carrot juice. Any info on the natural sugars in juiced veggies? How about the pom - just checked the label and it has 41g of sugars/carbs! Thanks. Guest guest
Home juiced fruits and veggies should be fine as long as they are on the SCD legal list. Guest guest
The Pom concentrate will not be legal on SCD... so once you start, that will have to go. Most people on SCD do not need to worry about natural sugars in legal juices. But *some* individuals who find they have extraordinary difficulty with yeast may need to limit some of those foods (fruits, honey) at first. Unless yeast is a huge issue, you will be able to use any of the legal juices (diluted) once you start the diet. I posted the list of legal juices just this past weekend, so you can find it by scrolling back through the recent messages. Patti Re: Looking for a totally sugar free drink Hi! I get nauseus before a snow or rainstorm but not from Hermasetas.I used saccharin from 1945 until the advent of the early versions of Sweet and Low . Carol F.
