Guest guest
Hi Allan, Some of the companies that make enzymes give free or low cost samples. You might also ask for samples from companies who do not offer the samples. The enzyme that are most necessary to restore are the enzyme that break down complex carbs. That is due to the fact that the pathogenic microorganisms in our guts eat carbohydrates. Scientific studies show that having unabsorbed starch in the gut produces an increase in the starch eating carbohydrates. Another name for starch eating carbohydrates is gram negative bacteria. Gram negative bacteria contain lipopolysaccharide, a toxin that is famous for producing inflamation in the gut and impairing digestion. I have also read that gut bacteria destroy the bile salts which make it difficult to digest fats. That is why SCD is able to work without the use of enzymes. However many parents report that enzymes really help accelerate the healing. There are some children who cannot tolerate enzymes during the early stages of SCD; this might be due to the protease in the enzymes. A special enzyme was made to overcome this problem: the new enzyme assists protein breakdown but avoids excessive amounts of proteases that may irritate or inflame GI tissues. http://www.giprohealth.com/prozymes.html Mimi > Hi Patti, > maybe I did not make my question so clear ! > I mean, is it possible to test the stool or .... > in order to compare with some sort of " normal " values > and this way around one could maybe get an idea IF it > was worth the effort to try to add some of the legal > digestive enzymes that could be low in the result. > My point is this: IF the Pancreas is not working > 100 % the way it is suppose to do in a childs body, > then one CAN have big problems in gaining full results > of the SCD no matter how long you stick to it and follow > ALL the guidelines as one should ...! Guest guest
Hi all, I'm also exploring enzymes as a possibility. My son seems to tolerate proteins fine, but not fruits and vegetables. Should I give a protein enzyme anyway (like peptizyde) or just a no-phenol enyzme? Thanks, Debbie (son uc, scd 15 months, not autistic)
Guest guest
Allan, I'm sure it may be possible to do some testing with your child's doctor, to find out whether a digestive enzyme would help. A doctor would possibly be able to tell you which one to choose for your child's particular needs. We just don't have that high level of knowledge about enzymes here..... we just focus on how to implement the diet itself correctly. Yes, some kids need supplements and enzymes, depending on their individual health needs. That's beyond what we feel qualified to determine..... or at least beyond what I personally feel qualified for. Patti Re: Digestive enzymes - when is it necessary on SCD ? Hi Patti, maybe I did not make my question so clear ! I mean, is it possible to test the stool or .... in order to compare with some sort of " normal " values and this way around one could maybe get an idea IF it was worth the effort to try to add some of the legal digestive enzymes that could be low in the result. My point is this: IF the Pancreas is not working 100 % the way it is suppose to do in a childs body, then one CAN have big problems in gaining full results of the SCD no matter how long you stick to it and follow ALL the guidelines as one should ...! The Pancreas can have a lot of hidden injuries inside as a result of heavy medication like AED(eg. Valproate Acid) and so it will not do the job 100 % as it was intended from the begining. And as a result of this, it will eventually have problems producing some of the essential/ main digestive enzymes and also - if it gets really bad - decrease the insulin production in the body.... ( So one could in fact be witnessing another " Vicious Circle " in this respect if there is a hidden problem with the Pancreas.
