Guest guest
Well, this probably isn't the answer that you're hoping for, but the best way is just to get started with the intro. You are right that he might not eat anything for several days. The record on the list, I believe, is nine days. However, if you are offering food, and he is consuming fluids, then he will be fine. Some kids do a hunger strike, but some kids shock their parents by eating the SCD food after their junk food is gone. I know it is hard for you to watch him cry in his chair when he is wanting something else. You have to stick to your guns, and remember that you are doing what is best for him. His health is more important than his tears over chicken nuggets. We'll all be here for you, too, so don't be afraid to vent if you're upset, concerned, whatever. Get that little guy on his way to recovery while he is still young. Meleah Problem eater...how to begin SCD My autistic little guy (3 years old) is gfcf and only eats: peanut butter waffles only a certain kind pancakes only a certain kind chips fruit (raw only) carrots (raw only) cookies bread (pb jelly, french toast) but only on a certain kind of bread sorbet ice cream fruit popsickles french fries I know, I know...all carbs...not good he will eat sometimes eat chicken nuggets from chick filet only (we use tons of enzymes for this infraction); The other night I made some delicious chicken nuggets in almond meal and he sat in his high chair and cried for over an hour and wouldn't touch them...he is so skinny anyway that we don't want to not feed him has anyone had this kind of problem with very limited range of food? He literally will not try anything new...I'm afraid if we don't offer him something that he will just refuse to eat suggestions very welcome on how to begin this diet
Guest guest
This is my 3rd week of SCD and I was in the same boat. It took several days for my son to like to eat the foods and maybe a week where I didn't have to use " video reinforcement " as much. What I would do is ABA style techniques by setting up his table and chair with me next to him and call him over COME HERE and have him sit and have a movie on pause so he could see it. I would say TAKE A BITE and give him a bite gently helping him put a fork in his mouth on the very edge of the tongue (dyspraxia issues so tongue placement is an issue for us too) which he still thrusts out and if he got a little bit of food in LOTS OF PRAISE and played movie for a few seconds. Then pause again and repeat. There was screaming, tantruming, meltdowns gallore. My guy is an eater and I was so scared because he wasn't eating! All the foods I was doing on the Intro diet were foods he wasn't used to eating...eggs, meats of any kind, chicken broth etc., Fast forward to week three and I am cooking/baking peeled and deseeded zuchini along with hamburger patties and he is eating them up. He eats his scrambled eggs and his chicken pancakes (a favorite for the carb lovers!) I give a little bit of banana because it stops him up. Today I intro a pear or apple sauce. Slow and steady. I am not going to lie I was in a deep depression that first week because when he is upset, not eating, in despair my temperment seems to equal his...we are linked in that way. Now that he is eating I feel better. Just don't give in and you have to press on everyday. Hey email me offlist if you want to talk it through. I know it's hard with our carb guys!
