Guest guest
Amy, Many families here start SCD dairy free.... especially if the kids were on a casein free diet previously. You don't have to use dairy. You might want to consider starting her on the SCD yogurt made with GOAT milk a few months down the road, just because it has super healing qualities. There are some good dairy free recipes on www.pecanbread.com . Yes, rice milk is illegal on SCD..... as all grains, and anything made from grains, are illegal. Homemade nut milk can be a substitute, recipes are on the website. It is not advisable to start SCD with nut milk..... though if you just have to have something to replace the rice milk, homemade coconut milk might be a good option. There is no legal canned coconut milk, although Tropical Traditions has a coconut cream concentrate product that is legal, which you can reconstitute and sweeten with honey or saccharin. www.tropicaltraditions.com/coconut_cream_concentrate.htm She might not find it to be an acceptable substitute.... it will taste different than the rice milk. But coconut milk has plenty of healthy fat and calories. You might be able to add other things (ripe banana, etc.) and blend it up like a smoothie for her. Die-off symptoms might include feeling " flu-ish " .... achey, headache, chills, slight fever, very tired and/or irritable. Some parents reports extra stimming or an increase of whatever behavior is most problematic for their particular child. Symptoms can be eased by soaking in the tub with epsom salts, keeping well-hyrdrated, possibly using activated charcoal supplements to sop up toxins. Guest guest
Hi Amy, Welcome to the group. Reactions can very so much from person to person. It can be anywhere from sleepiness, diharea, nausia, vomitting, irritability, increased stimming, or just about anything else. You certainly do not have to use dairy with SCD. She can drink SCD legal juices. Check the files on the list for the complete SCD legal juice list. We stuck with Welch's 100% grape juice for the first five months. I think that you'll be surprised at her appetite and eating habits changing after you stop giving her the milk and other starches/sugars. The milk making up most of her caloric intake is a red flag to me that she is " addicted " to the milk. We did go dairy free with our son for the first five weeks of SCD. He just ate very bland foods. It was a simply cooked meat, a cooked veggie, and a cooked fruit. We introduced the goat yogurt after five weeks, and he had no adverse reaction to it. Then, we tried legal cheeses and butter, and finally moved to cow yogurt. Like I said, we found that SCD dairy and egg free was very bland. To our surprise thoguh, iel began to eat things that he never would touch before. He used to abhor beat, but started to eat it varaciously when we pulled the starches and sugar from his diet. Keep a food journal of what she is eating on what days, her behavior, bowel symptoms, ect. This well help you if you ever wonder if she is reacting negatively to a food. Keep us posted. We're here to help you. Meleah SCD 05/06 iel 3.5yrs. ASD, Ethan 5yrs., Mark 20mths., both NT Dairy products & drinks Hello, My daughter is almost 2 and we are just about to start the SCD (waiting on our yogurt maker). I have a few questions: 1. According to IgG, my daughter is allergic to: Casein, cheese (cheddar), cheese (cottage), cheese (mozzarella), milk, whey nd yogurt. She was most allergic to cottage cheese, milk and whey, followed very closely by the others. She showed up to be allergic to goat's milk too but on a scale from no reaction to high reaction, she was at " low " for goat's milk. According to IgE, she was allergic to nothing. It appears as if almost all of the recipes I have found (including the yogurt) have dairy products in them. I noticed that milk, butter and cheese were a part of many of the recipes. What does this mean to Chloe's situation? 2. Being as young as she is, Chloe is drinking rice milk at every meal. Appears as if rice milk is illegal as is soy milk. What do you give a young child to drink when they are on this diet? 3. Chloe is pretty darned skinny so we try to ensure she gets enough calories and milk at meals and during the day is a good percentage of her calorie intake as she is a terrible eater. She chews food up and spits it out or just mutilates it with her hands. How will we replace these calories? 4. In Elaine's book she mentions several times to have support when you start the diet due to the reactions during the beginning of the process, however, I couldn't find any mention of what the reactions might be. Can you give me a little information on this? Thanks so much! Amy
