Guest guest
Patti this question may not have anything to do with your response below, but I need clarification. We got results back from all our urine and pooh tests and one thing my son needed was bifidus.... he had NONE in his system. DAN doc recommended Ultra Bifidus DF by Metagenics. If all bifidus strains are illegal on SCD how can I get this in him, his gut obviously needs it. Maybe in theory when the gut is healed bifidus will magically re-appear??? As i am typing I recall her looking at the Kirkman's catalog and saying " oh that's not SCD compliant " and maybe that's why she referred me to Metagenics. I don't recall if it was for this bifidus or something else though. Thanks Becky 3yold ASD SCD 7 weeks Patti wrote: Carol, This starter has bifidus in it.... all bifidus strains are illegal on SCD. Guest guest
Your DAN doctor may have meant whatever Kirkman product that was wasn't SCD compliant because it contained some other ingredient that wasn't legal.... like FOS or something. She may not realise that bifidus strains are not legal. Many of the DANs are unfortunately not completely knowledgeable about the details of the diet, even though they are in favor of it. That is a real dilemma, I know..... Elaine's comments on bifidus are based on watching people get sicker when taking supplemental bifidus. We've certainly seen that happen here, too.... with more than one child.... and at least one adult that I can think of. I don't think Elaine disagreed that bifidus is supposed to be down there.... but she was really worried about it's tendancy to overgrow, opportunistically, up too high in the gut. At least, that is what I recall about what she said. For what it's worth, I know at least one family that introduced bifidus into their child's body via enema (doctor recommended this.... parent didn't just do it on her own). You'd have to discuss that with the DAN doc and see if it makes sense to her. I honestly can't tell you how many families have their kids on SCD right now.... and ARE going ahead and using bifidus strains, even though they know they're technically not legal. I know some are. I know one family in particular that is.... but they had also been on strict SCD for more than two years before they added those strains in. I also can't tell you how many may have used bifidus with the diet in the past and did NOT make progress..... and eventually quit the diet, saying " SCD didn't work " . I know some have. I do know that one of my current private clients was using a multi-strain probiotic that contained bifidus until recently (not realising that it wasn't legal.... just giving it b/c the DAN recommended it), and her daughter was not doing very well. Took the product out and she's now finally making progress. They are keeping the product on hand.... for " maybe later " . I think it's definitely a dilemma. It's one you have to decide for yourself. It may be that getting stable on the diet would be the best first move (obviously that would get my vote)...... getting some healing behind you.... THEN introducing it cautiously (by whatever means), while not making ANY other changes, and just seeing if there was any ill effects. It's one of those difficult things.... like I said, it's not that we can't agree that those strains are *supposed* to be in the gut, but putting those strains in at the top in supplemental form is really a fairly new thing. We don't know if that really puts things " back to normal " or not. How do we make sure the proper strains go to the proper places and live in quiet harmony with everything else? Not sure we can guarantee anything. ANYhoo..... I sure think it's a parents right to do whatever they truly think is best. I just wish everyone would try to get some solid time down with the diet, 100% compliant, and then add these other things in later if they really feel they must. I've just seen too much frustration with families not being able to make headway with the diet while trying to pile 40 different supplements and chelation treatments and everything else into the mix, all at once. It's sort of like " Let's do EVERYTHING good that there is in the whole wide world..... RIGHT NOW " ... when maybe it would actually all work better, and fall into place better, if they took it one step at a time. Just *maybe*.
