My ten year old daughter (CP, dev.delays, epilepsy) does not chew well

either.... and I do end up pureeing, or mashing, almost all of her food. My

priority is on making the food as easy to digest as possible right now.

<<Naturally I am hesitant to

very good thing. Any opinion on the legal list of cheeses and eggs and

farmer's cheese?>>

You do not have to use any dairy foods if you don't want to.... it's not a

requirement. For kids that have been CF prior to SCD, we always recommend

waiting a few weeks, maybe a couple of months or longer, and then trying the SCD

yogurt made from GOAT milk, beginning with a very, very small amount and

increasing gradually as tolerated.

Eggs are not a dairy food. Some children have allergies or sensitivities to

various foods, and you need to avoid those foods that you know cause an obvious

reaction, although some food sensitivities will diminish or disappear after some

time on SCD.

<<if anyone has input on powdered supplements,

enzymes, and such please share. I need to order these items and most

of them are in pill form so I have grind them first. >>

Please take a look at the website, www.pecanbread.com and click " Supplements "

for many tips and a list of some of the legal supplements. This does not mean

these are the ONLY supplements you can use.... but you'll often need to read

labels and be sure that only legal additives are in ther " other ingredients "

category on the label.

I'm in the same boat.... my daughter can't swallow pills so I try to buy supps

in capsules that I can just open and mix into applesauce or something like that.

Sometimes I have to grind pills.... but I bought a little mini mortar and

pestle which makes it easy.

Loose powders and chewables often contain sweeteners and illegal starches, so

watch out for those. Read your labels!

Patti, Thank you so much for all of the input and references. I keep

trying to do my homework on the site so I don't ask questions I can

find answers to but I always seem to miss something! I haven't

introduced her to the yogurt yet so I'll do this first and see how she

does with it. Not sure why I thought eggs were dairy, ha! Thank you

again. -

It is kind of natural to group eggs with dairy even though they are not in the

milk

department :-)

Which Came First, the Cow or the Egg?

Q. Are eggs considered to be a dairy product?

A. What part of the cow would you consider they come from?

Giving you the benefit of the doubt, we looked up the word dairy in a dictionary

to find

that it comes from an Old English word for a " female bread baker. " The root of

the word is

the modern-day word for " dough. " And it is conceivable to us that eggs have as

much

relevance to the origin of the word dairy as butter does.

But nowadays, the word dairy only has to do with milk and cream and related

products:

sour cream, butter, cheese, yogurt, etc. You may often find eggs and dairy

categorized

together (several Ochef directory pages lump them together, for example), but

they

remain as distinct as the species from which they come.
