Guest guest
Teena, Actually, I think pears are supposedly fairly low in phenols compared to some other fruits. I'm not an expert on that, though. Are they organic pears? If not, could he possibly be reacting to pesticides? My husband reacts to pesticides on cantaloupe..... but eats organic melon with zero problems. Here's a site that has a lot of info on phenols, salicylates and other related stuff: http://www.danasview.net/phenol.htm Patti Phenols vs. reaction I'm trying to understand a phenol rection vs. a reaction to an ordinary food, and whether it matters? My son definitely reacts to pears-within an hour of eating them. hyper, tanrums, very unwilling to cooperate and deliberately instigating problems. Is this phenols, or just a reaction to pears? if it is phenols, what else should we avoid? I understand that many kids are later able to tolerate phenols, but I'd prefer to leave out any irritants so early on in the diet. thanks teena Ben ASD SCD 2 1/2 weeks
Guest guest
Pears are low in phenols, so lots of people use them. My son never has been able to tolerate them though. He reacts like your son. I'm not really sure why. I would just take those out and try something different. If you do try apple, I would suggest the golden delicious. They are low in phenols, and when they are cooked my son tolerates them just fine. You might try switching to them instead of the pears. Guest guest
Thanks for the input; I'll try the golden delicious next. Man, pears. He had them nearly every day until we started SCD. Who knew? It seems like he's sensitive to everything, but when I had him allergy tested a year ago, he came up with out any sensitivities at all. It's taken a long time for us to get on the right track because his issues are very mild, but there are plenty of them!
