I cannot cut/paste anything of his for you, but I'll try to summarize as best as I can what he said to me. Doc said: " Your sons' diet created an alkaline environment (and it did...I monitored urine pH with strips and was happy that they were consistently alkaline) which is good for keeping yeast at bay, but is an environment that certain types of bacteria thrive in. It can also cause a build up of ammonia, which is exacerbated by the overgrowth of the bacteria. If you acidify the gut, it will create an unfriendly environment for the bacteria. Die off from the bacteria may help your efforts to lower the ammonia levels. Your son has high levels of the bacteria pseudomonas and high blood ammonia levels. Let's try Flagyl, followed by Lactulose. " That is what he said to me as best as I can retell it. He said once I got the bacteria under control, the yeast would likely subside as well. He also said that once I lowered the ammonia level, I might see " the fog " lift. Billy is definitely in a thicker fog than ever before. I hope he will recover with the use of these drugs. If not, I am curious if anyone in this group who may have encountered the problem found another way to lower the ammonia. Janice
Guest guest
I would call in a metabolic specialist as well to get their take. It seems like they should be able to give you an exact protein count for your child & maybe have a dietician write up the diet with the proper ratios. HBOT removes excess ammonia & other metabolic waste. I assume Dr. Buie is the specialist you are referring to -- if so, does he put patients on SCD himself? - Janice Crabtree wrote: > > I assume you are working with a metabolic specialist if your child has hyperammonemia. Guest guest
That's probably great advice. All of our metabolic results are not in yet, so we've been waiting on those to decide if we need to see a metabolic specialist. in the meantime, we've added in metabolic supports like CoQ10, ATP, Carnitine, etc. We tried 40 sessions of HBOT/hard chamber and saw no improvement in ammonia, yeast, bacteria, language or fine motor skills. (We did see some improvement in gross motor coordination) In fact, he was worse overall when we were done. If it weren't for bad luck, we'd have no luck. Hmmm, too negative!! Let's say, we are still searching for the perfect interventions for Billy (Colby, too). I refuse to give up; I just know there's a way to make them feel better. Thanks so much for your input.
