Guest guest
Hi...can anyone help me figure out how to get more iron into my dtr (18 Down Syndrome and Autism) and still remain on SCD? She eats quite a bit of beef every other day but she keeps going anemic...seriously so. We just did an endoscopy/colonoscopy to see if she was bleeding anywhere to account for the constant anemia. Just to encourage you all.....the pictures of her innards (which no mother should ever have to see) were absolutely beautiful...clear and pink and healthy as could be. The endoscopy picture from 4 years ago before SCD looked like bloody red raw hamburger. She is totally off prevacid and zantac after 4 years so we have made great, tho slow progress (she is alot older than most of the kids here). She doesn't groan and cry from stomach pain anymore which is the biggest blessing and her poops are Nobel prize worthy LOL. Rgular and perfectly formed. However having to add iron pills to her diet causes severe gastric distress, iron IVs would take 3-4 hours 2-3 times a week an hour away. I guess I should double up on the beef and give it to her every day? I try organic liver which she totally loves (blecchhhhh) but I can only get in a spoonful or so before she gags. Do you think cooking, blending and pureeing, and freezing the beef removes the iron content? She can still only eat pureed foods. If this is true I'll have to find another more timeconsuming manner of preparation. She gets almond butter, macadamia butter, cashew butter (a TB per day of one), avocado, banana, chicken, beef, asparagus, string beans, acorn squash and carrots. I'm trying to introduce some spinach now (of course then I have to read about the low oxalate diet and drive myself crazyLOL). But she's too yellow and the doc wants to see more green veggies. Any more suggestions for good dietary iron? I hate those dang pills!! They do work but I'd rather leave her with the hematologist after I give them to her as she is so uncomfortable. Unless it's the processing she " should " be getting sufficient iron in her diet. Please help O wise ones...and stick to the diet!!!!! This is a miracle for . if you like please email me at gldcst@... as i am on digest and I can't wait to hear from you. Sherry

Elaine warned; Please do not get vitamins with iron; they encourage all kinds of infections especially in the gut, and iron has had much research done on it re other diseases. No oral iron if you can help it. Just eat the liver pate and if you like liver, eat it at least once a week. Here are some other SCD legal iron rich foods: Broccoli, ½ cup, boiled 0.7 Green beans, ½ cup, boiled 0.8 Lima beans, baby, frozen, ½ cup, boiled 1.8 Dried or fresh are permitted. Dried legumes must be prepared according to the instructions in the book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle Beets, 1 cup 1.8 Peas, ½ cup frozen, boiled 1.3 Vegetables, green leafy, ½ cup 2.0 Watermelon, 6 inch x ½ inch slice 3.0 A Sample List of Foods Rich in Iron: Dates or Prunes, ½ cup 2.4 Beef, Pork, Lamb, three ounces 2.3 to 3.0 Liver (beef, chicken), three ounces 8.0 to 25.0 Clams, Oysters ¾ cup 3.0 Dark meat Turkey ¾ cup 2.6 Carol F. Guest guest
You probably have already checked this, but just in case, since this seems such a mystery...has she had a thorough thyroid check? Thyroid problems can make a person seem anemic when they really aren't. I can't explain this, but I read it somewhere and it seemed to be true with me. , mom to > > Hi...can anyone help me figure out how to get more iron into my dtr (18 Down Syndrome and Autism) and still remain on SCD? Guest guest
> > Hi...can anyone help me figure out how to get more iron into my dtr (18 Down Syndrome and Autism) and still remain on SCD? getting enough iron in has a further challenge and that is to hope the iron is being absorbed.I learned a long time ago that when a citrus fruit or juice is consumed at the same meal as an egg, iron absorbtion is enhanced. SCD may address your oxalate concerns.Have you read this? http://www.pecanbread.com/new/ox1.html CarolF. SCD 7 years, celiac

Down Syndrome kids are notorious for having hypothyroid issues at an early age and if not then definitely somewhere down the road. 's been followed since she was 2 and has been on medication....she has been hypothyroid nearly all her life. But it's a great suggestion. It would be difficult to tell the difference. Thanks. Guest guest
Carol F, thank you so much for your thoughts and research. With help from Patti and Grammy I think I'm on the right path. I just fed her some liver infested food tonight and she took it ok:-) I will check on the pate recipe also. I'm not seriously worried about low oxalate....I truly believe SCD will be my last diet bandwagon....but sometimes all the talk gets you thinking you know? Thanks for the URL. I will check it out. Back to the drawing board (cutting board?) It's such a blessing that you all are still here plugging away at helping everyone. You all are so generous and knowledgeable. You helped me save my little girl! Sherry

Guest guest
> > I take Dessicated Liver tablets by Solgar. According to the label they are > starch free and I see no other illegals listed. > > This is for SCDadults: I make an incredible French Liver Pate but can't use it up all by myself so invite the neighbors in to share some wine and pate .Do not use all the butter in the recipe 25-50% will still make it very rich. It can be frozen but it affects the texture making it a bit grainy: Ingredients • 1 1/3 lbs fresh chicken livers • 1 large onion thinly sliced • 2 cup mushrooms thinly sliced • 3 tbsp Dijon mustard • 2 tbsp olive oil • 3 tbsp green peppercorns* • 1 tbsp fresh thyme flower • 1 1/2 tsp salt • 1 bay leaf • 1/2 head garlic • 1 lbs butter (modify this) • 1 1/2 oz wine or Vodka • 1 tsp Tabasco Preparation • In a large oven proof pan combine the livers, onion, and mushrooms with the oil, mustard, salt, thyme, bay leaf, garlic, and 2 tbsp of the peppercorns. Bake at 350°F for 40 minutes or until the liver is cooked and onions are tender. • Remove from the oven and strain off any juices. Puré the livers in a food mill or food processor and then blend into the softened butter. Mix in spirits, Tabasco and remaining peppercorns. • Press into an 8x4x2 " deep terrine mold and refrigerate until firm. * Whole peppercorns are an advanced food
