Guest guest
Hi, I totally agree with . The CF-kids often crave for salt and other spices. Fiona had big problems with chunky food, we had to blend everything and she lived mainly on baby formula until the age of five. But as long as she ate we didn't care whether it was " appropriate to her age " or not. Another problem was, that Fiona was not interested in eating, she never felt hungry. So we had to spoonfeed her and she always had toys or books with her during the meal. Sounds weird, but in retroperspective we are quite happy that we did it that way. Today, at almost 7 Fiona is a normal eater with no oral aversions and good weight (25 to 50% height to weight). It's only that her behavior at the dining table is really bad (can't sit still for five minutes), but we are working on it. Guest guest
Hello, Weight gain can be an issue for any child (cf or not). I know that it's probably not recommended, but I followed my son around feeding him all day long, even while he played. He just didn't have any interest in food. He was lucky to hit the 10% mark and does not have cf. Well, he's 15 now and eating is absolutely NOT a problem anylonger. Maybe they develop an interest in food as they get older? My grand daughter has cf. We added a tablespoon of heavy cream to her bottles when she was a baby. There is 100 calories in each tablespoon. We cook her food in olive oil whenever possible. I read somewhere (can't remember where), that you shouldn't force your child to eat anything. Try to give it to them. If they refuse it, don't press the issue. It can take multiple brief experiences with a particular food, before a child accepts it (flavor, texture). I wish you and you wife success in putting more weight on your baby. Guest guest
My son loved blueberry buckle at that age I added in epulor 32 grams of fat per 1 1/2 ounce (yes he liked it) There is also a new called benecal I am not sure how young you have to be for that one. My son does not even eat icecream either (I often think hes weird to too) I understand your struggles with this. I have never pushed him or begged him to eat although I want to every day. I have been thru the same things with . He started at a young age on pedisure and resource fruit beverage (a 250calorie juice with protein) It is cheapest at the CF Pharmacy by five dollars compared to others. He may be on these or he may be too young someone here would probably know. I hope you have a wonderful day. Guest guest
Where can you purchase Epulor? It sounds good as a frozen treat. My son will drink a can of Boost Plus everyday. This has 360 calories and is available at grocery and drug stores. It is also lactose free. He is a picky eater too. He does love Boston Market food though and I wish we had one down the street, instead of 15 miles away! Guest guest
Hi as you will find lots of parents on this list have been thru this .With 8 kids only 2 picky eaters both w/cf.We added butter to everything and half & half.If he is still on formula ask about adding more formula to up the calories per ounce. My 6 year old had to be on 45 calories per ounce. We had to use scandi-cal and polycose for extra calories as she could only hold so much volume in her tiny tummy.Lots of cf kids need 3000 calories per day to grow and gain weight which is very hard on those of us who try to help them.If he is learning to walk the motion is so important to him that food is left behind. You may also have a grazer (one who eats small meals 5-6 times a day other wise refered to as a hobbit)I know it is stressful watching your child not eat but 10% is better than the 5% Rebekah my 6 year old maintained for 4 years. Before that she was not even on the charts. We had a feeding tube placed to supplement her calories and she is now a 41 pound --43 inch 6 year old. Guest guest
We are going through the same problem right now with my son Micah 8, He isn t eating much and wont even eat the things that we think are so good ( Ice Cream, Cake, Pies )He loves Spaghetti so I started buying him the spaghettios and it has helped so much. If he doesn't like what is being made I can heat that up knowing he will eat it. He doesn't like shakes either but the deal with the Dr and Micah is that he has to eat everything on his plate or he has to take a 8 oz shake. I also started the token system where if he eats everything on his plate he gets 10 tokens and he gets to use them for Playstation 2 Since we have started that we have not had much problems at all with him eating. His appointment yesterday he gained 1 KG in 2weeks we were so happy and had a little party with spaghetti LOL. Katy I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. 16:33 -- Weight gain... 14 month old son w/ cf, doing well but recently has become a horribly picky eater. Guest guest
I'm not sure if your son is still on the bottle/nursing, but if he is off the bottle our nutritionist recommended the following. We add 1/2 cup powdered milk to 10 oz. of whole milk. I forget how many calories per oz this is, but the milk still tastes the same and is the same consistency so he'll never know you've added something to it. Also, adding chocolate syrup is an easy way to increase calories. We've started our son on Scandishakes and had good results - he is 4 years old and very picky also. Hope this helps, Weight gain... 14 month old son w/ cf, doing well but recently has become a horribly picky eater.
