I am celiac, have been on SCD nearly seven years and here are a few pointers about the diet that pertain to you and me: SCD is primarily about healing not weight loss but, some of us do have genuine concerns about obesity. I had to lose 86 pounds gained from being on lithium for sixteen years. I lost it before starting SCD . When an illness and the medications pretty much collpased my immune system, I became celiac and developed a number of sensitivities. A few months later I learned of SCD and have been on it since late 2000. At the start, I was most impressed with the quality of food and especially SCD baked goods. But there was a conflict because, they can be very calorie dense. I still find my weight creeps up a few pounds if I have too many dried fruits, nuts, baked goods or too much honey. Overall I have maintained an ppropriate weight by being watchful. I have a long history at Weight Watchers and worked for them and was so indoctrinated that t took me a time to separate a weight control diet from a healing diet and make them work in tandem. Just because baked goods using nuts or nut butters are digestible does not mean they can be overindulged in. I suggest you join (free) www.fitday.com and track your daily food intake. Keep your diet balanced, use fruits, vegetables and salads more liberally and save the baked stuff same as you would if reducing and not on SCD. I also had a thyroid problem and was taking Eltroxin, needed less when I was no longer obese. At Elaine Gottschall's suggestion I tapered it off gradually with my doctor's approval and no longer require it although I still have a low body temperature. Re; calories in nut flour and muffins. I figured out on Fitday that the muffins on page 122 of " Breaking the Vicious Cycle " which I make with pecan flour (calories similar to almond flour) are 251 calories each with 21 grams of fat. My tendency is to eat many more than one which means they should have a sign on them " Dangerous Curves Ahead. " Pecanbread is not a suitable place to discuss weight control as it deals with information about SCD so feel free to contact me via email if you need additional support in healing while losing the rest of the weight. I am having a a tough time too as I haven't been able to exercise lately do to a back problem. I have Tylenol compounded without starch, sugar or coloring at the local phramacy. BTW: I also look a lot younger than I am (75) http://www.angelfire.com/on4/diva_dog/ Carol F. SCD 6 years, celiac, 86 pounds lost

Guest guest
> > Can I e-mail you too? I need to lose weight too, and am on SCD. > > Sure, but make sure it is not just a few pounds. SCD usually regulates weight once a normal weight is attained. Start by registering for a free account at www.fitday.com where you can track your daily intake. Cut back on nuts, dried fruit, honey, butter and oils and red meat. (You don't need to eliminate them) Eat more fish and poultry, less hard cheese and use partly skim goat or cow'a milk for yogurt. Use an adequate amount of fresh fruits and vegetables cooked or, if you are beyond being a beginner some raw. use fruit rather than juice. Take SCD vitamins. Drink water. This information is only for those who are considered truly obese and I repeat, SCD is not a weight loss diet, but a few of us with gastric issues also have realweight management challenges. fat cells tend to retain toxins so health is as much a consideration as vanity. Guest guest
I actually lost a couple of stubborn post-baby pounds since starting this diet with my asd son. I think it is because of the lack of starches. I don't feel hungry as often and my hunger isn't as intense when I am hungry (blood sugar issues). I think if you really pay attention to actual hunger and fullness, you can do well with this diet, and get to a weight that is right for your body. Guest guest
Hello there, I just found your post and my goodness..you just described me I have IBS Chronic constipation. And I have always struggled with my weight..I think the IBS makes it more difficult to lose for some reason. I know that before SCD I exercised everyday for 2 hours and should have been a skinny as a rail but barely lost anything. Like yourself, the SCD has helped with the bloating. I still have it, but not nearly as bad. And I still have many, many days of being C. My diet is very limited, I don't eat anything that is difficult to digest and find I am hungry all the time. Fats are supposed to fill you up but I also count calories so I don't want to go overboard with it. Do you not find nuts to be a problem for you? Are you eating raw fruits and veggies since you have C and not D?

Before SCD I looked like a meatball on toothpicks, my middle was so swollen. I just now bought a size 16 skirt, I am excited to get below a tight 18. I do 50% fat, 30% carbs, and 20% protein. I allow calories each day for SCD yogurt, a slice of the basic nut bread, one medjool date and maybe 1 ounce of cheese. I do have a small salad three or four times a week, but I love oven roasted vegetables. Steamed vegetables are great too. I do eat raw fruit but only apples, bananas, and pears . I try not to eat more than 12 whole raw almonds at a time and not every day, kinda like the salads, too much and I get unhappy. I eat lean meat, fatty cuts give me D. Eggplant and tomatoes bother me because of the small seeds, I have to remove the seeds. I strive for a balanced diet with 5 servings of vegetables a day and 2 of fruit, 2 dairy servings and protein at each meal. Drinking diluted orange juice in the morning always inspires a bowel movement for me, thanks SCD. I have to be regular or I panic due to painful memories of childhood C. issues. I feel great, I have more energy, and I can think better most of the time too. Having my thyroid problem treated made a big difference as well. SCD is a life saver. I now have the confidence to talk to people without worrying about passing clouds of gas, or having to run to the bathroom in mid-sentence due to IBS issues. Guest guest
>>I feel great, I have more energy, and I can think better most of the time too<< Thats awesome! Trust me I know what you mean about the bloating. I thought I would never be able to put on button pants again and had every single color/style of jogging pants there were out there. Its funny though how truly different we all are with this diet. I cannot eat the cow yogurt..only a teeny amount of goat (which is so disgusting thats all I want anyways Cheese and butter are also out. Bananas and apples too. Although I can eat pears and peaches and pineapple with no problems. I'm the same with the salads. I have lettuce salad a few times a week with plain olive oil. The oil seems to help digest it better. Before when I ate the yogurt..my favorite meal was salad with yogurt dressing! I wondered why I got bloated after eating it and always thought it was the raw veggies....instead of the yogurt. I'm not sure about nuts. Do you find that if you eat too much of the baked almond flour things it binds you up? I don't make things too often because its hard to eat just one tiny piece..of say the bread or a loaf or something. Old habits die hard. I'm glad the SCD is helping you so much!
