Re: Fat-Where's It At?

I am not an RD but I do know a bit about nutrition. The standard

ratio for a balanced diet would be 55-65% of total calories to be from

complex carbs (not applicable to SCDers in the whole grains sense, but

instead from fruits, vegetables, the honey, etc), 15-20% lean protein

and the remaining 20-30% would come from healthy fats (unsaturated, no

trans). The SCD diet would be rather high in fat if one eats a lot of

the breads, muffins, etc because of the high fat content of the nuts

plus any added (butter, coconut oil, ghee, etc). The nuts are a

healthy fat but a fat nonetheless so if one is trying to reduce fat

intake, then the baked goods would be the first place to cut back on

and also to not liberally use the butter, ghee, coconut oil, etc.

Fats contain 9 calories per gram while the fruits and veggies and the

lean proteins contain 4 calories per gram. I hope this is the info

you were looking for or maybe I misunderstood your question.

What I meant to say is I discontinued a lot of excess nut baked goods and am

using less

butter and oil. I still use some olive oil and spread almond butter on fruit.

The higher ratio

of fat I used to use gave me some indigestion. My current ratio is about 38%

fat, 32% carbs

and 30% protein. I am also one of the minority of SCD-ers with obesity concerns,

currently

being at an appropriate weight but having had a large required weight loss prior

to

starting SCD. My above stated ratio keeps my weight stable.

I have found that fruit and vegetables add bulk and satiety. SCD was never

intended as a

" nut diet. " I have lost 5.5 pounds in the past month and will strive to maintain

my current

weight which is just in the high end of the healthy range according to Fitday.

Carol, check out the optimal diet and you will see that the fat should be the

highest percent with protein next and carbs very small. Pearl

Elaine always praised the value of healthy dietary fat but didn't say much about

the ratio.

Since I have cut back a bit on fat I feel much better, digestively speaking.

Dp other veterans or moderators know anything about this?

Carol, of course you do the scd with the food. They along with many other have

come up with percentages for maintaining health. It's contrary to the mainstream

thinking on how important good fats are to the diet. Pearl

No disrespect Pearl as I know you were trying to give me a healthy gemeral

overview.

I should have been more speciific What I am after is for SCD authorities that

knew Elaine

ever heard her commemt on what percentage of the daily diet should be fat. She

never

told me. I have forty years of experience with my personal diet and nutrition

and worked

for Weight Watchers for ten years.

Each dietary protocol differs in the suggested ratios of fat to protein and

carbohydrates in

the weight control sector. SCD is a different matter. Some people also do not

digest fat

well.

I was hoping Sheila, Patti, Charlene or Mimi would recall if Elaine evr

commented on this.

I don't remember her ever saying a ratio, Carol. I think she just figured if we

ate balanced and everything in moderation we would be ok. She was so concerned

with healing the gut first that I don't think it really crossed her mind.

Well that is good, because " balanced " is really working so well for me.

www.fitday.com

is a wonderful resource for tracking nutrition, listing sensitivities,

reactions, solutions and

even calculating the values for the SCD recipes we make up. I am glad I raised

this

question as I do not recall it being discussed before.
