Back home from my TP/ICT!

Well I am back at home after my total pancreatectomy and auto islet

cell transplant on Sept. 24th. Dr. Sutherland did my surgery. I was

able to get out 6 days earlier than they said I would. I have been

doing pretty good so far. I am diabetic now. I have to take 15 units

of Lantis once a day and lispro for my meals. I have to watch my

carb intake. The diabeties is all new to me. I honestly thought I

would not be diabetic. I had chronic pancreatitis for 2 1/2 years

and thought by going in early to have the surgery I would get lots

of islet cells back. I guess not. I only received 105,000 islets.

Dr. Sutherland said my pancreas was a mess and was lucky to get that

many. He figured I would only get 75,000. He took out my pancreas,

spleen, and appendix. I will be at home recovering for about the

next 3-4 weeks before going back to work. My pain hasn't been too

bad lately. I do have a lot of pain when I eat though. It feels as

if my pancreas is still there when I eat. That is where the pain is

located. My 4 yr old boy can eat 3 times as much as me right now! My

stomach has shrunk a lot. I've lost about 10 pounds since they took

me off TPN. I have a long ways to go to get my energy back. I get

tired real easy. Oh well, in a couple of months I will be better

than I have ever been! If anyone has any questions about the TP/ICT

I would be more than willing to help. I hope everyone is going well.

Darren,

glad you are home now and recovering well. Sorry that you are now

diabetic. Just take it easy and let your body get the rest it needs.

Your strength will return a over time. Continue to let us know how you

are recovering.
