I hate to be a downer, but, while the " official " (i.e in BTVC) line is that it

is " difficult but possible " to be a vegetarain on SCD (no further details are in

the book, at least as I recall), we did not find it possible to be lacto-ovo

vegetarians and be on the SCD.

My husband and I had each been vegetarians since we were teens, and our four

kids have been raised vegetarian. When our dd was diagnosed last year with a

very severe case of Crohn's, we immediately started her on the SCD. We have

included fish, chicken and red meat (all ocassionally. She kind of hates them

all) in her diet, although she'd much rather we didn't....Life has been a lot

better since she has been able to eat beans prepared the SCD way. Now THAT'S a

dinner we can all get happy about eating! But beans are an advanced food, so

you can't use them right away.

If you can get your child to eat cheese, eggs and nut flour-/nut butter

products, you may be able to stay vegetarian.

Good luck with finding answers to your child's health puzzle.

Welcome to the list.

Are you vegan? Or are you able to include eggs and dairy products?

It would be difficult to do SCD as a vegan, I think..... though not impossible.

Nuts are allowed and legumes. Legumes are considered an " advanced " food....

best for a few months down the road.

Many children come to SCD as extremely picky eaters. Most of them end up

surprising their parents in a short while, by eating foods they never would have

before.

Vegetarian and SCD

Hi,

We believe our 2.25 year old son is autistic ... are waiting for a

formal diagnosis. I read about SCD just today and am very interested.

We are vegetarians. Just wondering if we can really put my son on this

diet, as he is already a picky eater. Wanted some advice from ppl who

have been there.

Thanks in advance,

Anu

Hi Anu,

We're in the same boat you are. We're vegetarians and our son is waiting

for diagnosis.

I started SCD for him 3/2 and we're onto some of the stage 2 foods. I decided

the meat thing wasn't as bad as autistic type behavior. The rest of the family

(mom, dad, 18, 16, & 4 y.o.) are still eating from the garden minus breads. It

grossed out the family for me to make the broths so I do it when they're out of

the kitchen! won't eat the meat so I toss it after the broth. Except for

tonight....I served him some cooked chicken that came from the broth and he ate

it! I think he was just so hungry that it didn't matter. Get ready for

that....great appetite, huge amount of pee/poop and sticking around the house

(which we did anyway) so he can get his sleep in.

These folks here have been such a great help to figure out sneaky ways to do

things! I put ice cube broths into hot pureed veggies to cool them down. He

definitely hates eggs so I scramble them and Vita-Mix it well with squash. On

the whole he's doing way more veggies than broth but maybe even that will

change. He hasn't seemed to miss starches and isn't crying about illegal's (food

that is, now non-food items are another issue!). He's actually so VERY happy to

have all his food pureed that he eats most things I put in front of him. He was

impossible to feed before.....consequently he's gained a few pounds....besides

some very nice behavior changes! I liked the recommendation to wean them first

from startches for a few days before the start of intro AND to do intro on a

Friday. I did both and was glad I did.

Hope you decide to do this most amazing diet! We've done PT, OT, & craniosacral

with little changes. This has blown them out of the water...tho we still carry

on with a few things ourselves to compliment the diet.

Hope this helps somewhat in your decision making.

Thanks for your reply. My son hates even eggs, so I really doubt if

he can stand the smell of fish. Will try chicken soon.

Good luck to you and you daughter

Thanks for your reply. We do include eggs and dairy in our diet. But

my son just can't stand the smell of eggs, whatever form they may be

in. I'll try introducing chicken but have my doubts about his

accepting fish. My concern is about the intro diet.

Thanks again,

Anu

We don't eat fish at all because of the mercury, and all of us are sensitive to

eggs.

If you want to add chicken, how about cooking it when he is not around, and

then airing out the house?

I had another thought: I add pasteurized liquid egg whites to smoothies to make

them a good source of protein. It is tasteless, so maybe this would help your

child....

Good luck!
