Guest guest
Hi , I wonder if it was the corn starch in VSL#3 that caused problems, or the bifidus? As you said, it's impossible to know. The " illegal " part of Culturelle, as you know, is the inulin that they put in with the bacteria. I have heard that they now make a version that is just the lactobacillus GG, without inulin, but I have not been able to find out where this is available, or verify that it's even true. I wish I knew a link to direct you to. If we could find out, then this inulin-free version of Culturelle would actually probably be fine to use on SCD. Guest guest
, My experience with UC has been mixed. I am thankful to SCD for so many things and I will never go back to eating the way that I did. After 6 years, however, I am still incredibly sensitive and have to watch everything. I am not sure I will ever be entirely 100% but again, I won't compromise on SCD. UC can be incredibly difficult to deal with and can be very stubborn. I have finally found a good balance of supplements and food and I don't think I will venture too far from it. I am so thankful to be feeling so much better than I was though. I was deathly ill and pray I will never go back to that. Charlene UC 8 years SCD 6 years We had a similar experience -- both times, a year apart, that our 8yo son with UC took supplements with bifidus (first Metagenics df bifidus, second VSL#3) he became severely ill almost immediately, and needed prednisolone and Remicaid to stabilize. This was before we started SCD last fall. These supplements were recommended by a doctor who does know SCD, but thought bifidus would be helpful (our son had no bifido bacteria at all in his stool culture, which he said was unusual), and we were never entirely sure it was the bifidus that made him so sick. It was so helpful to read BTVC and understand that bifidus has been a problem for others. Now that he has been on SCD for 4 months he is doing much better and we are tapering off the prednisolone. We still use Culturelle, which is illegal, because I am terrified to switch anything at this point until he is well, but hope once the bleeding is entirely gone that he will be able to switch to a legal supplement. I have a question for those of you dealing with UC -- did you find it took a long time before symptoms completely subsided? He has made tremendous progress on SCD, is down to 1 formed or almost formed bm/day, sometimes 2, but we still see blood and mucus in his stools. It's much less than last fall, when he needed 2 transfusions, and his blood counts are finally normal (hurray!) but we would love to see the bleeding completely stop. Also every time he gets a cold, the bleeding gets worse again. I know from the book that it took Elaine's daughter 2 years before symptoms were gone -- is that what others have experienced too? , mom to 8yo son, UC 4/05, SCD 11/06, prednisolone (6mg/day, down from 45 mg/day), azulfidine (1500 mg/day) Recent Activity a.. 17New Members Visit Your Group
Guest guest
Patti, I spent time last week on the web and calling suppliers trying to find the " without inulin " Culturelle. I talked to someone at the company where it is made and she said yes, they make one with and one without--but, any suppliers I contacted always had inulin listed on their boxes. My husband was going to a town with a Walgreens so I asked him to check there--the same day I went to a WalMart (which is now also listed as a place that Culturelle is available). We both found the same box--and it does not list inulin as an ingredient. I can't describe what the box looks like because our daughter took them back to college with her.
