Guest guest
Kim, How do enzymes mess up the system for someone who has celiac disease? My twin two year olds have celiac and I just introduced enzymes three days ago. I will pull them in a heartbeat if they cause harm and not any good. It was still too early for me to tell if they were really helping or not. Any information you can give me would be very much appreciated! Guest guest
I didn't see these two questions until after my loooong post. I did address it there but will do so again here with the reason as to why it can be important. My son is extremely sensitive to gluten. A contaminated school desk is enough to get him going (hand to mouth issues). The only way we got around it was to wash, rinse and dry his desk (and chair) with 3 sets of paper towels. We tried enzymes first though and they seemed to make the issue worse. (When we did this diet, you need to remember that I had no support group - just Elaine's book.) I didn't know why the enzymes weren't helping (actually seemed to make things worse) and so I set out to research enzymes. The bottom line is that if you don't know the specific enzymes that work for celiac disease... then you are better off taking none when it comes to gluten contamination. Kind regards, KimS > > We need to know this too - we started enzymes about 3 weeks ago - We have not come across anything on the websites about celiac or enzymes about not taking enzymes if you have celiac. Is the info in regards to taking enzymes and still consuming gluten - which we know you cannot do if you are celiac. If celiac then no gluten at all - ever. But if on SCD then one does not consume gluten anyway but the enzymes could still help with digestion? We are still very new to all this soooo - Back to more research I guess. > > > W. > >
Guest guest
There are also some issues regarding use of enzymes for those who have ulcerations and inflammation in the gut.... that the protease enzymes *can* aggravate this, according to the experience of some of our list members. I know there were some posts about this some time ago... and that some SCDers know of Elaine's concerns about enzymes for individuals with severely damaged and/or inflamed guts. I'm sorry I don't personally know any more than that. If anyone else does, please post your experience.
