Guest guest
Thank you Patti -- Last question here for a while... I live in a very hot part of the country -- is the starter some thing I need to order in bulk now so that I don't have to have it shipped after it gets hot (by April it will be hot)or are legal starters generally available at retail? If I need to order a bunch I should just do it now when I order the yogurt maker so it would be helpful to know. TIA, > > I like my Yogourmet quite a lot. It's very easy to use and reliable. I paid $60 for it.... online. I couldn't find one in any store in my area (Portland, Oregon area). I saw a small Salton yogurt maker in one store, but I really wanted the larger batch capability. Guest guest
I used to be able to find Yogourmet starter on the shelf at Wild Oats, but they stopped carrying it. Now I order from Lucy's... and I ordered a full case of 12 boxes, in order to get the best price. Yogourmet starter does say to keep it in the fridge, although it isn't shipped on ice.... though I ordered in early spring and I'm in the same state (Washington) as Lucy, so it wasn't a concern. Some people like to use the GI Pro Health starter, if they are trying to stay away from even the slightest trace of cow dairy.... I have not ever used anything but Yogourmet. I'm not sure if they ship the GI Pro with ice packs or not. I don't *think* it's available in stores... strictly online. Seems to me that one is either kept in the fridge or the freezer for storage. It us a matter of personal preference. The GI Pro Health Progurt didn't agree with me. I have used cow's milk yogurt just as the starter for seven years and am fortunate that it has proved agreeable. Almost all the lactose gets consumed during incubation and the proportionate ratio is 1/2 cup yogurt to a whole quart of milk. Of course I would say most Pecanbread members probably use the commercial starter. Carol F. SCD 7 years, celiac
Guest guest
We bought the Yougurmet yogurt maker that Elaine sugested in her book and I noticed that after 24 hours of fermenting the yogurt when I checked the temperature of the yogurt maker it read 119 degrees, I know she stressed that the temperature should not exceed 110 so is still o.k. to use it. Thanks,
