Guest guest
, Dealing with liver disease, I can tell you that once your liver is functioning better, you will be absolutely amazed at the changes. Thankfully, the treatment for my liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, (prednisone and imuran) does not tend to make you as sick as the treatment for hepatitis C. However, while prednisone is a miraculous and life saving drug, it is a horrible drug, too! It messes with your mind - MAJOR mood swings. It made me incredibly nauseated instead of making me hungry like it does most people. It also caused this horrible metallic like taste in the back of my throat for the first month. I could go on and on, but you get the idea. However, the 10 year survival rate for people with AIH who do not get treatment is only 10%. so, not taking the medication was NOT an option! I honestly don't know if starting or stopping the prednisone was worse. Neither was fun, but despite the side effects, overall I felt better after only about 2-3 weeks of starting the medication. For me, adding protonix to my meds helped a lot with the nausea the prednisone caused. I also have a good supply of both phenergan and zofran. However, I do try to limit zofran to only my worst days because people with liver disease should really not take more than 8 mg of zofran in a 24 hour period as it is hard on the liver. I wish you well. By the way, I just got a new version of Dr. Palmer's Hepatitis and Liver Disease book. It has been updated in 2004 to have the latest and greatest info on all types of hepatitis as well as the treatments and just general info on the liver. It was under $15 and well worth the cost.
