Guest guest
Our age-old question - Is the PA gone or not? Yes, e - you are right to assume that PA 'could' still be there despite the culture. Some labs, particularly those not used to testing patients with CF, do not even look for PA. Also, PA and other bacteria sometimes slip to undetectable levels (a good thing, I would think since it means there is less of it there), only to flare up at some later time. As to the Tobi, our clinic keeps patients continuously on inhaled Tobramycin (Tobi is not used commonly through our clinic) until they have at least a couple of cultures, spread out over a few months, that are clear of the PA. I won't comment as to the bronchoscopy as they are seldom done here in Canada just to see what is growing. M 2 in a row ....I received her culture results and for the second time in a row, it came back with no PA!! ....Am I right to assume that PA could > still be present despite the culture? Guest guest
Hi e, It is my understanding that even when they have been cleared of PA they have to stay on the Tobi for 6 months because this is the period when it can come back, was cleared of it twice on the cough swab but when they did a bronch they found it was still in the bases of his lungs. I would ask for a bronchoscopy because if it really is gone she doesnt need the Tobi. Hope this helps. - mum to 2 1/2 with CF e wrote: Hey groupies!! I had to take in to the dr. last Thursday. Things just didn't seem right. Her energy level was down, she was coughing from her toes etc... So he put her on septra and prednisone. Three days later she was feeling better. I asked him if he had a pill that worked that good on " attitudes " . Anyway, I received her culture results and for the second time in a row, it came back with no PA!! Woohoo!! Now, do I get excited? I am a little reluctant to trust the lab there at the Naval Hospital. This goes back 13 years when my son was born in distress and spent 10 days in NICU for spinal meningitis and pneumonia...story for another time. So I guess you could say I am celebrating cautiously Am I right to assume that PA could still be present despite the culture? The only way to really tell is with a bronchoscopy correct? Should I ask the doctor for this procedure? Is it necessary? Or do we just stay on Tobi indefinitly? I completely trust our cf doc, but I am hesitant when it comes to keeping her on Tobi, especially when the PA is not there....or is it?? I also wanted to ask if anyone else has noticed that there has been a " twin boom " on the board. When I joined in October, I remember seeing only one or perhaps two families with twins. Truly fascinating. To the families of twins here, you have my utmost respect! Welcome to everyone who has joined recently!! e, mom to 10 wcf and Ian 13 nocf ------------------------------------------- The opinions and information exchanged on this list should IN NO WAY be construed as medical advice.
