BHT in corn oil as preservative?

Hello everyone - this is my first post. I've answered a ton of

questions just by searching the archives, but didn't find any info on

this question: is BHT legal as a preservative?

I'm trying to decide whether or not to join Sam's Club, and their

walnuts (Diamond brand) list " BHT in corn oil as a preservative. "

Nice. This may be a dealbreaker, b/c walnut butter is a staple in my

son's diet (his IgG came back with reactions to almonds.) I also use

raw cashews & pecans, but walnut butter is a fave.

IgG also showed a reaction to corn, but I seem to recall from BTVC that

we don't need to be too worried about oils from reactive

foods...right?

Thanks so much.

The corn oil would be a deal breaker anyway... Sorry.

Can you make your own walnut butter?

Kind regards,

Thanks for your reply! Yes, I already have been making walnut butter

myself (yummy!), but not with the Sam's Club/Diamond walnuts. I'm

wanting to know if the BHT makes the Sam's Clug walnuts illegal. If

they are, then I may as well not join Sam's Club!

But...you're saying that the corn oil is a deal breaker - is that

because of his IgG test? (BTVC says corn oil is okay, but I'm foggy

on this point...still new!)

Thanks for the guidance,

Suzanne

Corn oil is legal on SCD.

I wouldn't be too thrilled about feeding my kid BHT, but it's not illegal. I'd

certainly look for a different source for plain raw walnuts. Do all brands have

this added?

I feel spoiled.... I have BUCKETS of free local organic walnuts sitting here.

All clean and dried.... but still in the shell. Hubby sits down and cracks a

quart or so for me once in a while.

Suzanne,

You're right.... corn oil is legal. And BHT is one of those things that is

just a chemical preservative. It's not " illegal " .... just not very desirable to

feed our kids. That's something you can decide on outside of SCD, though.

My apologies for the incorrect information! I had no idea that corn

oil was considered 'legal'.

When we did the diet I had only the book to go by and so interpreted

it as any grain product being off limits. (It's always better to err

on the side of caution anyway.)

I still don't think I'd use it though in the healing phase. But I

didn't use any preservatives either except the one that is accepted in

BTVC in apple cider.
