Guest guest
people do band at 8 mo or older, but results are quicker and better at a younger age. It really depends on how mild the plagio is. Banding is really not a big deal. What type of band are you looking at? I don't think your window is closing, but it isn't wide open either. Some orthos don't like banding after 12 mo, but many will band up to 18 months or older. -christine sydney, 5 yrs, starband grad > > Hi Everyone, > > My son is almost 7 months old. He has mild plagiocephaly which is being treated with CST, with some success. However, my husband doesn't think he's seeing enough of a change and thinks we need to go with a helmet. I am trying to convince him to give me another month of CST before we decide. But our orthotist told us that the " window of opportunity " for the helmet is quickly closing and that he'd rather put the helmet on at 7 months than 8 months to get the best result. I really want the helmet to be the last resort. Has anyone else put a helmet on at 8 months or later and had good success? > > >
Guest guest
How severe is the plagio? My son was categorized at 18 months as moderate with 14.8 mm CVA (cranial vault assymetry). We combined CST, PT, and the helmet which really has cut his treatment time down significantly. If I were you I would get your child measured and evaluated at cranialtech or with a star scanner to see where he is now. If it is worth banding you should pursue it and keep doing the CST. Sometimes it can take a month for the script, insurance coverage, and helmet making to happen. Guest guest
Hello ,My daughter was banded two days before she turned 8 months. We got great results from 14.5 mm(hand measure) 13mm(scan) to 2.47 mm(scan) in 15 weeks. However, I would really warn against waiting past 8 months because their growth really slows. My daughter's growth slowed drastically at about 10 months(most of her correction occurred in the beginning of treatment.) Obviously, banding at 7 months is more ideal than 8 months.I think most people who band at older ages do so because they were falsely led to believe by uninformed pediatricians that their child's head would "round out on its own." Our ortho would only band up to 18 months and some insurance companies won't cover banding for older babies because of the belief that their growth has slowed so much that very little correction will occur. Indeed, babies attain 80 percent of their cranial growth by the time they are 13 months old. Good luck!-Amy From: christineashok <christineashok@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Fri, January 7, 2011 1:17:55 AMSubject: Re: Helmet at 8 months? people do band at 8 mo or older, but results are quicker and better at a younger age. Guest guest
I never quite understood the CVA measurement - but I believe the orthotist said it was around 6 mm. I am positive that his head has changed for the better since starting the CST. I'm inclined to just leave it the way it is. My husband is looking for perfection. Its good to know that we can still do the band in a month or even more if we need to. Thanks everyone. > > Hi Everyone, > > My son is almost 7 months old.
