Guest guest
I found it interesting how many parents have mentioned their CF child has sinusitis. How often do your children get sinus infections? Do you do nasal lavage often and can you tell the difference in mucus when they have an infection and when they don't? How many surgeries, if any ,have your children had? And what antibiotics and what is the of duration of use? My son's sinus polyps found by the ENT is what made us urge for CF testing. He had two surgeries this last year to clean them out. We rinse his nose out every night. Currently he is on Ceftin. I am will to bet that as soon as we stop the Ceftin he will get a full blown infection. He has his nose " vacuumed " every 2-3 weeks by the ENT in the winter. His CF doctor is wanting to switch him to IV antibiotics is he gets another infection as soon as the Ceftin is completed. I am trying tea tree oil inhalations as well but they don't seem to be helping that much. I am curious how other CF centers treat the sinusitis. Guest guest
Wow; I have cf and had non-stop sinusitis until roto-rooter surgery at OHSU in 1989; now have Tobrymycin infused into my sinuses at my ENT's office monthly, and I can actually CLOSE my mouth from time to time! My kidwcf still has non-stop sinusitis; we both had polyps, too and that is a long story; kid still has sinusitis, and had ear tubes (the long ones) throughout her childhood, did, alas, lose some hearing. Kid responds well to Levaquin; for me it takes Tobramycin and Aztreonam I.V. if things really get going--which is rare now. I hope that this is helpful. Cipro(floxacin) does work for both of us, but the resulting Candida Albicans is no fun! Best of luck your way, n Rojas Sinusitis I found it interesting how many parents have mentioned their CF child has sinusitis. How often do your children get sinus infections? Guest guest
Hi Jan, again. My daughter has had 13 sinus surgeries. She would never tolerate nasal lavage at home. She has been on many antibiotics for sinus infections including IV's. Her last surgery was over 4 years ago and at her last admission in Sept she had a CT scan. I thought for sure she would need surgery but she didn't. I don't know what we have done differently or if she has grown out of it (I doubt that). She has been on Tobi so maybe that goes up in her sinuses and helps. She also had a severe aspergillus infection in her sinuses (the surgeon said her sinuses were full of black crud--gross huh?) when she was 12 and was on prednisone and sporonox for 4-5 months. That seemed to help a lot. If your kids keep getting sinus infections have them checked for fungi. good luck, love, M
Guest guest
I just had my 7 yr. in to the ENT Tuesdays. His left side is totally obstructed - nasal polpys - right side totally clear!! Why is that? He is going to surgery on February 19th at Manhattan Ear Nose and Throat - 2nd surgery....same time last year as a matter of fact. The nasalcort AQ was keeping things at bay. The Dr. wants him on gentemicin - I know I spelled that one wrong after. Apparently they are finding it is good with sinus'. The word chronic and sinusitiis go hand in hand!
