Guest guest
Rita, My daughter is 19 months old and had her button placed when she was 4 months. Considering the circumstances it was necessary for our daughter to have the button at that time. She was 4 months and didn't even weigh 8 lbs. Overall we have had a positive experience with her g-tube. The only thing I would suggest is if you do get the g-tube, try not to let your child become dependent on it. If they are eating most meals by mouth and the tube is only for supplemental or night feeds, use it for only that. My daughter will not eat anything by mouth now. She is totally dependent on her tube, and we are now in therapy to try to get her to eat. The button has been a blessing for us, it has enabled our daughter to " catch-up " with other kids her age, as far as size goes. I hope that you find the answers you need. Guest guest
Rita, My twins have always been tube-fed, since they are orally averse. I credit this with their being in the 50% or higher for height and weight. They're healthy, happy and full of energy, but it is a lot of work, especially if they're hooked up to a pump at night. Lots of getting up in the wee hours to administer enzymes. It is well worth it if it means a healthier child though. Nutrition is SO important to our little ones. hugs, C Mommy to Mick and Alli, 4 yo twins wcf --- rita_gercone wrote: > Can anyone relate their experiences with a g-tube to > me? Guest guest
Hi Rita, My daughter has a g-tube. She also has terrible reflux, so she got the nissan fundoplication when the tube was placed. The nissan, though absolutely necessary, caused us more problems than the tube and feeds themselves. One VERY important thing is to NOT let the child become dependant on the tube feeds for all nutrition. If your daughter CAN eat, make sure that she does. it is very hard to get kids to eat once they become dependant on the tube. Check out our site at http://groups.msn.com/TeamJane<http://groups.msn.com/TeamJane> click on the " adventures in g-tube land " page for the full story on 's tube and Nissan surgery. mom of 5 with CF and a boy on the way G tube Can anyone relate their experiences with a g-tube to me? The doctors are considering it for my daughter. She is 10 months old and weighs about 15 pounds. She is going to be having surgery for a malrotated bowel soon and I think they are going to put the tube in then. It sounds scarey, but from what I've read people have good results with them. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Guest guest
Hi Rita, My son, , had a g-tube placed, as well as a nissan, in October 2001. For it was the best thing, he still eats, and I agree with whole heartedly about making them eat and become dependant on the tube. The nice thing about his tube is that when he just flat out refuses to eat, we can do a bolus, but that is after all else has failed. The only problem we have had with the tube is the granulation tissue under the button, but once we started using eucalyptus and safflower oil mixed with lukewarm water it got much better. Hope this helps. Take care, , mommy of 4, 4 1/2 wcf, GERD
