Guest guest
This comment is from Elaine's website, www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info, from her legal/illegal list: <<Dr. Haas advised not to use cocoa or chocolate and this still goes, it isn't just the sugar he was worried about. >> I am honestly not sure the exact reason it is objectionable. I thought that was covered somewhere in the book, but now I just see that it says " Do not use chocolate or carob. " I have to assume that it's got some sort of starch that will feed gut pathogens. Patti cocoa powder Can someone please explain to me why cocoa powder is illegal if the ingredient on the product is only " cocoa powder " ? thank you in advance! Guest guest
I had thought the book only said (about cocoa) that it was addictive - not anything about being a disaccharide or polysaccharide (sp?). So being logical I thought - coffee and tea are allowed and caffeine is addictive, so why not cocoa??? I wish someone get to the bottom of this. I can't help it I like to know the WHY, and not just accept it cause someone said so. Anyone know anything to shed light on this one? Guest guest
According to this website, cocoa contains saccharose. http://www.rain-tree.com/chocolate.htm Saccharose is another name for sucrose,a disaccharide. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sucrose http://www.thefreedictionary.com/saccharose http://www.bartleby.com/61/77/S0007700.html Cocoa also contains salsolinol, a chemical that makes people crave cocoa. http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/bb/neuro/neuro01/web2/Mendillo.html http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/abstract/40004278/ABSTRACT?CRETRY=1 & S\ RETRY=0 In the presence of external chocolate cues, chocolate addicts were more aroused, reported greater cravings, experienced more negative affect, and also ate more chocolate than control subjects. Self-report measures on eating attitudes and behavior, body image, and depression confirmed that a relationship exists between chocolate addiction and problem eating. Chocolate addicts showed more aberrant eating behaviors and attitudes than controls, and were also significantly more depressed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------\ ------------------------------------------------------------------- If I had the time,I would find more reasons to avoid chocolate.... Guest guest
Folks, We went around and around and around on the subject of chocolate on this and the Long Island List when Elaine was still alive. People argued and argued and argued because they didn't want to give up their chocolate. Elaine finally put her foot down, after quoting research and more research for why chocolate (even just cocoa powder) was illegal, and people just would not give up arguing. Know what? I'm a chocoholic, too. Know something else? I gave it up because I valued my health over my chocolate. No time to hunt for the information I know I have -- good Ghod! It's Christmas Insanity Week! Here are two notes I did find, from my files. carob * illegal * BTVC p 58. * Although carob is often touted as a 'healthy' alternative to chocolate, it isn't legal. Period. Besides, it doesn't even taste like chocolate. chocolate * illegal * BTVC p 58 states firmly that one should not use chocolate. Yes, we know. Giving up chocolate can be tough. Keep in mind whether the taste of one piece of chocolate is worth spending hours in the bathroom, or risking loosing your colon. Did you know that vanilla, which is legal, is the flavoring in white chocolate? Double vanilla extract can add wonderful flavor to your desserts, and solve that chocolate craving. (MLA) When I have time, I will, if the moderators permit, tell my story about chocolate and carrots. (Warning: it tempts the chocoholic...) It is NOT a matter of caffeine... it's other compounds in the cocoa that are an issue. But I do not remember what they are without going and looking -- and in fact, I'm going to be late for work now as it is! -- Marilyn (New Orleans, Louisiana, USA) Undiagnosed IBS 25 Years, SCD Five Years Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
