Guest guest
Good morning! I have a couple of questions now that I've lurked for a bit, researched the archived posts, read the book and both recommended web sites as well as others dealing with SCD. We will start the SCD right after the holidays. We figured it was not a smart thing to start right before going to grandma's for a week with 4 days on the road. I was referred to this diet through the book " Gut and Psychology Syndrome " Natural treatment for Autism, Dyslexia, Depression, ADHD, Dyspraxia by Natasha -McBride MD. She highly recommends the SCD and the book. I've also had SCD recommended to me by an acquaintance. Here is our situation/ our why for this diet: * son age 12 - though mom and dad would do the diet too. * Extremely dyslexic & dysgraphic, ADHD tendencies, sensory integration issues, eye teaming/tracking trouble, extremely high IQ., balance and coordination problems, * picky eater - will only eat about 4 meals fixed a specific way - we cannot change brands or he notices and refuses to eat it. * Everything was fine until around age 5. He used to eat anything natural and healthy and then he began sliding down the slope to picky eating - things he used to enjoy eating like fresh broccoli he would just announce " I'm not into broccoli anymore " and never ate it again. We've gone both routes of " well this is what is for dinner - you will eat it. To the opposite " Fine - no problem but I only cook one meal. There's the kitchen if you want something different go fix it yourself. " Which is what he would then do. I figured he was not getting any attention for his food so he would branch back out, but that has not happened and it has been several years. " I have litterly seen him (as recently as last week) stand in the kitchen and cry " I'm sick of eating the same thing but nothing else tastes good. " " I'm starving hungry. " He says this while actually sobbing. After a while he ends up choosing the same food again. He does this about once every other month. About 3 yrs ago he went totally without food for 3 days when he was at my sister's and she did not have what he wanted. He was litterly throwing up sick by the time I found out / when I picked him up. She said she figured he'd eat when he got hungry enough. He often gets migraines and throws up. Sometimes he just gets sick to his stomach and throws up (no migraine). All his problems manifested around age 5 - even the ADHD tendencies - up until then he was totally calm and focused - he changed dramatically - we even had to quit going to church as he could not stay still at age 5 or 6 when at age 2 he would sit with a book. He started reading at age 3 and then in first grade we were told he could not read, etc. I even saw a huge difference in his running. I'm not sure how to actually go about getting the SCD started with him as he is older. We have been telling him that we are going to start this diet after Christmas and we will stick to it for at least one year. He is not complaining. We have been slowly eliminating the illegals in the house for about 4 weeks. If we already had it OK but we have not purchased anything else that is illegal. The cupboards are getting bare and I have all the illegals sitting out on the counter - the family knows that if it is not gone by Christmas I am getting rid of it. Any other ideas for starting with an older child? I am thinking I need some good references to go over the why of this diet with him - I keep saying we are going to heal our insides to be healthy but maybe I need more..... He is very visual and would watch something if I had it to show him - or a book that explains this in a simple way. I may just sit him down and read bits of both books to him. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. W.
Guest guest
Well, I think you're fortunate in a way because he has the intelligence to understand that the foods he has been eating for years are not good for him. I think he already knows that in his own simple way based on his recent crying episode in the kitchen. As far as I am aware, there is no child's version of the scd book that would explain it in a more child like manner. I would simply do as you suggest, and read some bits and pieces from the books. I believe that he will understand due to his age and intelligence. Do not be surprised if he does go on a hunger strike, vomit, or get other symptoms of illness. This is pretty common when the harmful microbes are dying off. Make sure that you already have a good scd legal probiotic in the house for everyone to begin taking immediately. It is critical to have good floral to replace the bad as it leaves the body. I also like your idea of sitting out all of the illegal food for him to see that it is truely going to be gone soon. My other suggestion would be to go ahead and make up some intro diet and first stages foods to freeze now. That will help you not to feel overwhelmed when it is time to start. You can make up a lot of chicken soup, applesauce, nut muffins, ect. Good luck. Meleah scd 05/06 iel 3.5yrs., asd, Ethan 5yrs., Mark 19mths., both nt How to start with a 12 yr old Good morning! Guest guest
There is a file in Pecanbread that may give you some ideas. Guest guest
The comic book version of SCD is on both the first version of pecanbread and the current website: http://www.geocities.com/scd_post/scdcomic.html Another easy to read explanation: http://www.geocities.com/scd_post/easy.html My son who started SCD as a teenager helped me make the comic book version. Below is a copy of a post about a very important article about the science of SCD. You might need to read it several times before showing it to your son. Read it together and help him understand it. I am planning to rewrite it in a simpler and more easy to understand format. I would love to have some volunteers to help me write an article about how the latest science research backs SCD. Mimi ===================================================== Here is the way to judge the scientific merit of SCD. The American Medical Association is the official organization for doctors in the USA. It publishes a prestigious journal for medical research:the Journal of the American Medical Association. An article was published in that journal by Dr Henry Lin,faculty member at USC. That article vindicates Elaine and SCD!! It explains the following points: * Gut microrganisms are the cause of IBS. *Starches that were not well digested produce the gut microrganisms. *Gut microrganisms emit endotoxins that disturb the brain. There is even more.... It is very important to go to the 90+ references and read their summary by clicking on the links. It is great to read and see that the ideas of SCD are backed by medical evidence. If your local doctor does not know about it,you can now prove that it is due to ignorance and negligence.LOL http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/full/292/7/852 If you are unable to link to it then use this link to it from a SCD website: http://www.geocities.com/scd_post/jama.html PLEASE try to access it from the original website. The pictures have not yet been loaded and it is more impressive to read it in its official site. http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/full/292/7/852 Registering as a Guest is FREE. Registered Guests gain full text and PDF access to the contents of this article because it is more than 6 months old. The writing is very hard to understand. My husband could not understand the article when he started reading it,but I encouraged him to continue and he was able to get important points from it. The article convinced him that Elaine's work is scientific. Mimi > There used to be a comic book version of SCD that was posted on the old > website.... maybe we can get Mimi to revive it? Guest guest
Well, it certainly can't hurt to start taking it now if you already have it. But, make sure you have the probiotic before you get started on scd. Also, make sure that it is definitely scd legal. People do sometimes think that they've got a legal one because there is no sugar or whatever in it, but it might have illegal strains of bacteria in it. You can always check with the group if in doubt about the one that you have or are planning to buy. Meleah Re: How to start with a 12 yr old Should we begin taking it now or when we start the diet?
