Guest guest
Sorry, but the Knudsen pear juice is not legal. And it won't matter what they say about what's in it. There is something about the processing of both apple and pear juices that makes them not okay for SCD.... even if " nothing else is added " . It has to do with what happens to the natural sorbitol in both of these fruits when cooked in the commercial canning process. Fresh pear juice that you make yourself, at home, with a juicer, is perfectly fine. 100% legal. So it might be worth investing in a juicer. You can also STEAM pear chunks, in a regular stovetop veggie steamer that fits inside a saucepan...... with about an inch of water in the bottom. When the pears are done and tender, SAVE the " water " in the bottom. It will be very sweet.... and drinkable as " pear juice " . Patti Juice Questions - Again! I've gone round and round and, like others on the list, found pear juice to be substantially less in phenols. Knudson's Organic Pear Juice lists its ingredients as: Juice from ripe, whole organic pears, ascorbic acid (to maintain color). That''s it. Sounds legal to me but... I have a call into the company but hoped to get comments while I'm waiting (and trying hard to steer our son away from oj or grape juice. Thanks! Guest guest
Thank you Carol and Patti for your quick replies! Humm...not legal, even when they list those two ingredients. Carol, you mentioned Welche's White Grape Juice. I did buy this once and wondered if they had different ingredients. Does anyone think that the Welches White Grape Juice might have less phenols than the grape colored? Interesting. I'll do some more research. That would certianly be great for us. Thanks again for all of the time you both put into this list. Invaluable. Patti wrote: Sorry, but the Knudsen pear juice is not legal. And it won't matter what they say about what's in it. Guest guest
Out of curiosity, what are the pumpkin pie smoothie, ginger pear smoothie, and purely pear that are at the bottom of your post? Meleah Juice Questions - Again! Hi folks, I realize this question of legal juices has been discussed quite a bit. But, I'm hoping I can add a comment and ask a question. Again. Our son, due to the high phenols in grape and orange juice, can't drink these while on SCD. It tooks us some time to finally realize what the proble was, but we observed irritability/hyper activity with both Welches 100% grape and Tropicana Regular Orange Juice. Both were diluted a great amount with filtered water. He drinks a lot of juice/water though, through the day. Not sure what is causing him to increase his liquid intake to this extent while on the SCD. We would perfer he just drink filtered water and we're working on it but haven't had great success to date. We also need a " vehicle " to get in the many supplements we give him daily. I've gone round and round and, like others on the list, found pear juice to be substantially less in phenols. Red wines had a much higher phenol content than white wines. The concentration for 50% inhibition of low-density lipoprotein (IC501 was measured. The white wines had a significantly lower IC50 and thus were better antioxidants than red wines. The phenol antioxidant index was defined as the ratio phenol concentratiodC50. Red wines had a significantly higher antioxidant index than white wines and thus are a better source of antioxidants. All wines were better antioxidants than ascorbic acid or tocopherol under these experimental conditions. The index should be a useful criterion to compare antioxidants in foods and juices. Carol F. Guest guest
We add a little squeezed lemon and a bit of honey to water. The kids say it's lemonaide. We used to use yogurt to mix meds in. Now we use a bit of legal honey, stir it up and give it to him on a spoon. One bite, all done. No sippy cup checking. Hope it helps. > > Juice Questions - Again! > I've gone round and round and, like others on the list, found pear juice to be substantially less in phenols. > > Knudson's Organic Pear Juice lists its ingredients as: > > Juice from ripe, whole organic pears, ascorbic acid (to maintain color). Guest guest
Hi, andra. Try Knudsen's " Just Pomegranate " Juice (thanks for reminding me, Joan!). It is low in phenols (salicylates). We can't do apple, grape or OJ either. My son likes it 50/50 with water, but if you can do honey (my DS can't), you can put a dab of honey to sweeten it. > > Hi folks, > > I realize this question of legal juices has been discussed quite a bit.
