STARBand - no shaving?

Hey everyone! Quick question for you.

My son has been in a STARBand since July 23. He is doing great and his head is

looking good.

I see that many of you talk about having the foam shaved down, etc. Anyone not

need this?

My son's helmet has not been shaved down inside at all. I am not really

concerned, because his head is looking so great and there have been no issues

with him wearing it.

I was just wondering if anyone else was able to have their child complete

treatment without needing the helmet shaved?

Thanks,

Hi - we started with the STARBand on July 28 and ended on Oct. 28. I think we had it shaved maybe twice? So I didn't have no shaving, but did have very little. My daughter was out of it earlier than anticipated. I wondered the same thing as you....but since we were getting results I didn't think much of it. Hi ,

Ideally the starband is an active band, which would require it to be shaved to

make room as the head grows. However it could also be made a little larger and

work as a passive band. An active band puts gentle pressure on the head in

prominent areas, and a passive band is a symmetrically shaped shell that your

child's head grows into. Generally active bands are more effective and/or

quicker, but passive bands can have good results too. It sounds to me like your

ortho is using the starband as a passive band. I'm not sure if that is

intentional or not.

I know my ortho dismissed the distinction between active and passive to a

certain extent - but then he definitely had to shave the band until there was no

more room to adjust.

I'm glad your band is working. I will be interested to read and see your results

when your done.

My son does have pressure spots on the areas to restrict growth, his right

forehead and left back and side. The other areas are free to grow. He did have

5 mm of improvement in his first 5 weeks wearing the band. We haven't measured

since then, but I have absolutely seen improvement in his head. He has had head

growth overall since we started, but I guess not enough to warrant the shaving.

We go back again next week, so we should find out how long he will have left in

it. There is still room for his head to grow in the spots where it isn't

touching though. The only adjustment we have had is the spacer piece of

foam...we got a thinner piece to hold the band tighter.

Thanks and I will definitely post results when we are all done! :)
