What about Culturelle Lactobacillus GG by Kirkman's is that legal? My DAN

suggested it to treat the clostridia infection in my son. She said some Dr.

Snow ( i don't know if he is some big doc in the DAN community or what) had done

some extensive research and found that the Cultruelle Lactobacillus GG was one

of the most effective for clearing up the Clostridia. I just ordered some from

Kirkmans---should we order this s. boulardii stuff instead. I guess i need to

run all my " prescribed supplements " by this group because these DAN's aren't

real sure of what they are doing. You guys know more. I'll post my list later,

just wanted to ask this for now. by the way we were on just the acidopholis but

were told only the GG would clear his clostridia up.

There is ONE other thing that is *sort of* a probiotic, that is

legal.... and that is s.boulardii. It is not a bacterial strain, it is a

beneficial yeast. It seems to help with clostridia infections. Other than that,

yes.... only acidophilus.

The doctor might mistakenly be thinking that the kids can have ANY strain of

probiotic, as long as no illegal starches or sugars are added. That's not true,

however.

Custom Probiotics- Legal??

We are in NY seeing our DAN practitioner for the initiation of

chelation therapy, and were advised that we need to change and increase

his dosage of probiotics. He suggested a custom-made probiotic, and

indicated that it would be SCD legal. I'm apprehensive as it seems

that no probiotic is legal except for the lactobacillus acidophilus,

and only one capsule/day at that. He as been SCD for almost 6 months,

and taking Kirkman Lab's lactobacillus acid. all that time. So, my

question, is there a custom probiotic which is SCD legal?

I believe that Culturelle is not legal because it has inulin in it.

For a complete list of legal supplements please go to www.pecanbread.com and

look under Supplements.

Becky,

I clipped this from Kirkman's website:

<<Each CulturelleT capsule contains a guaranteed 30 billion colony-forming units

(CFUs). CulturelleT is manufactured in a size #1 vegetable based capsule and is

in a chicory root base called inulin.>>

<<Lactobacillus CG is grown on whey and will contain trace levels (less than 15

parts per million per capsule) of casein and whey, which are proteins found in

milk. >>

I've not heard anything about this particular product being effective against

clostridia, only that s.boulardii is. It could be, I don't know. But,

unfortunately, it's not legal because of the inulin.

Too bad there is no other way to get this strain either, if it happens to be a

good one.... because Con-Agra, the manufacturer, has a patent on it, according

to other info on the Kirkman site.

Another response.... Becky, I just found this website:

http://www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/nmdrugprofiles/nutsupdrugs/pro_shtml

(I'm sure Yahoo groups will break up that link, so you might have to cut and

paste it into your browser.)

It's quite a lengthy article about research that's been done on all kinds of

probiotics.

I clipped just a bit from the page...... and copied it here:

<<Lactobacillus GG has been shown to inhibit chemically induced intestinal

tumors in rats. The probiotic appears to alter the initiation and/or promotional

events of the chemically-induced tumors. Lactobacillus GG also binds to some

chemical carcinogens.

Saccharomyces boulardii has been shown to prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea

and also to prevent diarrhea in critically ill tube-fed patients. The mechanism

of this antidiarrheal effect is not well understood. S. boulardii has been found

to secrete a protease which digests two protein exotoxins, toxin A and toxin B,

which appear to mediate diarrhea and colitis caused by Clostridium difficile.

The protective effects of S. boulardii on C. difficile-induced inflammatory

diarrhea may, in part, be due to proteolytic digestion of toxin A and toxin B by

a secreted protease.>>

And this, from the summary:

<<Among the probiotics, only S. boulardii, E. faecium and Lactobacillus sp.

have been useful in preventing antibiotic-related diarrhea. In one double-blind

study, 180 hospitalized patients on antibiotic therapy were randomized to

receive placebo or S. boulardii supplementation. Incidence of diarrhea was

significantly lower among those receiving the probiotic, compared with controls

(9% and 22%, respectively). These results have been confirmed in other

controlled studies.

Lactobacillus GG significantly reduced the severity and duration of rotavirus

diarrhea in infants in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Other

researchers have demonstrated that the incidence of acute diarrhea and rotavirus

shedding can be significantly reduced among infants admitted to the hospital by

adding Bifidobacterium bifidum and Streptococcus thermophilus to infant formula.

Lactobacillus GG has been shown helpful in the treatment of diarrhea associated

with relapsing colitis due to Clostridium difficile. These studies, however,

were small and uncontrolled. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial,

Saccharomyces boulardii was significantly superior to placebo in treating

diarrhea despite having no apparent effect on Clostridium difficile toxin. >>

Hope that helps...

There are two different Culturelles--one with inulin and one

without. Our daughter has it all college so I'm going on

memory here but I think it is the yellow box that does not

have the inulin and the green box does. I wasn't aware that

Kirkman's made it--I thought

that the Culturelle brand (ConAgra) had a patent on

it--they say in their brochure " Culturelle is the only

probiotic in the United State containing Lactobacillus GG. "

So, Kirkman's has it and calls it " Culturelle " ?

Kirkman has the Culturelle brand.... made by ConAgra. They are distributors. I

think they only have one version available on their site, though.... the one

with inulin.

Maybe if parents requested the other one, they could get it?

S. Boulardii is specifically helpful for clostridia,

our DAN recommended it for my son. It would not be a

good supplement to mail order, though, it can't go

without refridgeration or it will not be effective.

You should be able to find it in the refridg. section

at a health food store.

Hope this helps! Mostly I read here but this was one I

thought I might be able to help with.
