Guest guest
Hi, my second son has been on the diet for 4 years, and my wife every so often asks the same question. When can we go off the diet. My son is almost 8 now, so he's been on the diet for a good portion of his life. Often the answer comes to us in the shape of an infraction. His younger brother will urge him to eat some illegal food, and it won't be too long before we hear him repeating his favorite lines, or become giggly. It is clear that he has had an infraction, and that he is still 'symptomatic.' For us, that has become the answer. Whatever the magic time may be (if there is one) we haven't reached it yet. It would be nice if there were a study done on whether or not the diet needs to be conducted forever, especially since I suspect that the symptoms will be less obvious once the child becomes an adolescent, and knows what behaviour is suspect, and then try to control it. By the way, I remember reading something by Sedaris that made me very suspicious about his being 'on the spectrum' and how he had lost the urge to act compulsively over time. Has anyone found their children gradually lose their autistic traits as they grow? Our son is doing remarkably well in 2nd grade, thanks to SCD and being CFGF (were also off soy) He still has difficulties socially, and problems with if/then thinking. But he has progressed so remarkably, we are so glad we found your site. -AW.
Guest guest
My son is 3 with ASD and he did great on the GFCF diet for 6 months and has started stimming again and having ocd behaviors in the last few months. He continutes to have yeast/bacteria in the gut. If we did this diet, how long do we do it for? If it is supposed to heal the gut, then it's my assumption that once that happens, he can go back to eating normally again.
