Hi Suzyq,

I have hereditary CP with extensive calcifications. My attacks

started when I was 5 and I'm now 58! The final definitive diagnosis

was made as a result of a CT scan which showed up the calcifications.

There are several imaging tests which could show up the nature and

stage of the CP (but don't always), eg. CT scan, EUS and ERCP. I

have to say that I can't remember with certainty which of these

tests is the most useful in diagnosing obstructions but the ERCP

certainly allows a close look at the pancreatic ducts etc. I'm sure

someone else will reply to this question with greater certainty.

I had a CT scan and ERCP in 1988 which revealed nothing even though

I was pretty desperately ill at the time. It was only last year,

when the CT scan was repeated, that the calcifications showed up.

When during the intervening years they developed, I can't say. My

gastroenterologist implied that, even though I've had the illness

all my life, the calcifications could well have developed quickly at

a particular stage. They didn't necessarily develop gradually. He

expects the same to happen when I develop diabetes, which both he

and my pancreatologist believe is the most likely next stage.

I do know how frustrating it is to have so many questions

unanswered. I hope the way becomes clearer soon.

With very good wishes,Suzyq.
