Guest guest
, I'm glad they've still got you on coumadin. It worried me thinking you've had a blood clot and you weren't on blood thinner. Have they ever tested you to see if you have a clotting disorder? The autoimmune clotting disorder I have is actually pretty common. It's called the antiphospholipid syndrome and it is the most common cause of blood clots and strokes in young women. It also has an 80% chance of causing miscarriage if they don't know you have it. It causes blood clots in the umbilical cord and placenta. It is easily treated with blood thinners. The OB/GYN has already told my 22 year old daughter that she will have to have daily heparin injections throughout pregnancy to carry a baby to term. When they know you have it and treat you with blood thinners, chances of having a healthy baby are almost the same as any healthy person. In my case, it takes between 7.5 - 10 mg to keep my INR at 3.0. take care,
Guest guest
I don't have a clotting disorder with my blood. I remember one time when I had cut my finger pretty bad whilst cooking and a nurse at the clinic told me that my blood clotted well. I'd never had a blood clot before this. It took me ages to get the level of coumadin my body needed to stabalize. I was getting it checked every week, which is why my port still flushes 100%. Nurses are amazed at how well it draws, and say that is excellent for the 18 months I've had it in. But i'm sure it's because of the weekly flushes it got. For the past 3 months i've been put on monthly checks as it has stabalized. The only reason I am on the coumadin now is for the port, but as long as I can get it to last, the port will always be a part of me..my veins are shot from my many hospital stays and the only place where they can get blood from any more is a small vein in my hand. I just wish that medical staff would believe me when I tell them that is the only place. They always say..well, we'll see and I come out black and blue over my arms, in pain, and the last place they seem to try is where I told them originally..grrrrrrrr
Guest guest
As for being on coumadin, I am too due to a blood clotting disorder that caused a 2 inch clot in my main coronary artery and caused a heart attack and required bypass surgery to stop the heart attack. My clotting is so bad that they have to keep my INR at 3.5-4.0. I know that is really thin, but if it goes lower I get chest pains from the clot. They weren't able to remove the clot due to it's location so they have me on coumadin AND plavix to try and break it down over time. Kimber -- Kimber Vallejo, CA hominid2@... Guest guest
Kimber, that has got to be so scary for you! I truly feel so lucky to have never had a blood clot or stroke (so far just a few TIAs - mini strokes) from my clotting disorder. Take care, W
Guest guest
, I've learned to live with the coumadin, just have to be careful not to get cuts. Luckily, my heart has healed fine from the heartattack and surgery. I'm sure the mini strokes are scarey enough to deal with. Kimber -- Kimber Vallejo, CA hominid2@...
