Guest guest
Hi Group/ Patti ! I wonder if someone can enlighten me here a little bit, and tell me when and IF one can be certain that the Probiotic and/ or the Yoghurt in fact is doing their contribute to the overall well-being on the SCD- diet and in fact decrease the amount of patogenic bacteria in the gut/ intestine and is not " just " givin becouse we are suppose to ..... ? I think it can be VERY difficult to tell when one has a child that has not learn to speak yet and at the same time conclude on any of these issues - I mean we have seen a GREAT number of clear measurable results regarding his number of seizures before and after this wonderfull diet - NO doubt about that, it has been dramatic cut down by @ 95 % or so AND his well beeing is also better and he has much more energy now than before the diet, but regarding the introduction of the Probiotic (Kirkman) and the Yoghurt(goat) I can not see the same clear results yet - we have tried to take it on and of for some time but still we are very uncertain that he in fact is needing or using this " supplement " at all. How do we know this for sure - we have been on the diet for 1 year now and would like to make it as " simple " as possible for him and at the same time effective ! Regards and thanks /// Allan, father to: 9.5 years, SCD for 1 year(GFCF, and only low GI carbs, due to low seizure-threshold), Epilepsy, retarded and mild ASD. Guest guest
Allan this is off topic and doesn't have anything to do with your question, but I noticed in your signiture the word " retarded " was one of your descriptors of your son. I am a school psychologist (one of those people who make such diagnosis'). While I am not very " schooled " in epilepsy, ever since i found out my son is high functioning autism, my professional opinion has changed regarding the diagnosis of mental retardation for autistic children. Way too many of these kids have retardation as listed as their secondary diagnosis - especially in the school setting. Part of being autistic is limited to no development of language skills, hence typical intelligence tests can not accurately assess a child's mental capabilities. So when a child can not process information in a way that others intended for it to be processed, these kids may inappropriately answer or not answer at all and then they end up with a diagnosis of MR. All here know there is alot going on in their little brains, WAY more than they can articulate to us. Anyway, I was just curious if there were other reasons why someone would have told you your child was retarded. Whenever I see the words retarded with autism, I feel I have to say something. Feel free to email me off list to explain further or tell me to mind my own business :>) Becky 3 yold son ASD Allan wrote: Hi Group/ Patti ! Guest guest
Allan, This is a tough question to answer. I don't know how anyone can say, unless you're doing stool testing or something, how to be " certain " that the probiotics and or yogurt are helping. Have you read the book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle? I'd just have to refer you back to chapter 3, which is titled " Intestinal Microbes: The Unseen World " . Elaine gives quite a bit of information there. Beyond that, I have copied this from her website: <<Probiotics are harmless bacteria. Generally speaking, they don't really actively do anything for us. Their value lies in the fact that they take up space that would otherwise be utilized by the bad guys, keeping the opportunistic nasties from overgrowing. >> And this, also from her website: <<You asked, Did I read something on list about if you're not 100% on the diet not to use probotics?? From Elaine, Yes, you did and I meant it to apply to people with IBD. Of course, again, I am alone in the field of alternative and mainstream medicine who says this. But my guide is the fact that the " soil of the body " determines the type of bacteria that survive in the gut. And if one is on SAD, all that starch and sugar down there is bound to cause mutations in the probiotic which are all anerobic bacteria which live on carbohydrate. >> I think the point is that the beneficial bacteria serve the purpose of keeping the bad ones in check... keeping everything in balance. Yogurt has other healing qualities that go beyond just a delivery system for probiotics. It is the fermentation that makes the dairy proteins themselves more digestible.... and the pH of yogurt is helpful in maintaining a friendly environment in the GI tract to support healing. There is more info about yogurt in the chapter I referred to in BTVC, so I think it would be a good thing to go back and re-read that.
