Guest guest
Lack of weight gain is my main reason for starting this. She absolutley can't afford to lose weight. (only 17 pounds at age 20 months) After being on an extremely high calorie diet (comprised mainly of sugars, carbs, milk) and not gaining, we wanted to try something differnt. Now after 4 days, she's still just picking at food and refuses any liquids. (She does take a little, maybe a total of 2-3 oz/day!) I've tried broths, the Welches 100% grape, both white and purple watered down, homemade Jello, and grape juice popsicles. The popsicles are the only thing really working. (She ate 3 today.) I've made the electrolyte which she did take some of from a syringe. I made the baby formula in the book, but she refused. Water works for about a moment. I've bought a coconut, (I can't seem to find UNsweetened coconut anywhere and gave up looking), in hopes of making coconut milk. She doesn't trust anything in any kind of bottle, cup, you name it. I've purchased totally new cups and it isn't doing much better. She's eating some chicken, carrots, beef, bananas (she'd eat those all day!), and maybe a piece of apple if you sneak it in. She won't eat egg, anything made with egg, (I cooked an egg with pureed chicken and apple), or applesauce. I just bought zucchini, squash, spinach, and avocado to begin preparing for later, (or sooner, if need be). Do I need to start worrying? (Believe me, I'm well past that point!) When do I need to say enough is enough? She's always had a constipation problem and that continues so far. She's on Miralax for that, but I used to mix it in with her formula. I've tried using a syringe, and basically, forcing it into her since she won't drink anything. Please help! Guest guest
A little weight loss in the very beginning is not uncommon on SCD, but I can see why you would be extremely worried about any loss for her. Thing is, if the gut is very damaged, and has an overgrowth of pathogens, *some* weight loss can actually occur just from the bacterial colonies dying off and leaving the body. So... in a way, some of the current weight she has on board could theoretically be the mass of " bad guys " that are happily living like parasites in her gut, being fed (before you started SCD) on all of her old favorites. You DO want them to go away.... for sure. So, just be prepared for that. That shouldn't account for very much weight, though, in a child that small. Gee, I can't imagine making coconut milk from scratch.... from a whole coconut!! I guess it can be done... but what a chore! I wouldn't know where to begin! The liquid inside might be very good for her to drink, too. I just saw a show on TV over the weekend that referred to people being stranded on desert islands, surviving on coconuts.... the liquid and the fresh meat. Very good stuff. You can order coconut from www.digestivewellness.com in the " nut flours " section. I personally would go ahead and try some ripe avocado..... now. It's a wonderful food, and *generally* easy to digest.... but high fat/calories. I hope you can get her to eat it. It's so hard to get some kids to be open to eating the new foods sometimes. You may have no choice but to force feed her a bit.... and definitely are going to have to push the fluid issue, or you'll have even more severe constipation. Plus, when you get really dehydrated, you lose your sense of thirst.... so it becomes harder and harder to get them to drink. I've been at that point with my daughter in the past.... and had to syringe in the fluids, one cc at a time. Squash would also be a good choice right now..... butternut squash is my pick. It's got the finest, smoothest texture. Less fibrous than some of the other squashes. Beware of her eating too many bananas..... and applesauce. Both tend to be somewhat " binding " . In other words, they will tend to firm up the stool... so in her case, might exacerbate the constipation. Plus, any food that a kid tends to limit themselves to.... especially a sweet food like banana, can become a problem. Hopefully, she would allow you to make her a banana smoothie, with some other things mixed in. Cooked, pureed squash goes well in a smoothie, and you might be able to sneak some chicken broth in, if it's not highly seasoned. If she refuses to drink a smoothie, you might make it thick enough to be spoonable by freezing the bananas in chunks and dropping them into the blender with a little broth and/or water.... and some of the pureed squash. If you made the baby formula recipe, I wonder if a little bit of it could be snuck into a banana smoothie, too?? I wouldn't aim for drinkable.... go for spoonable, as nothing is going to be a satisfying replacement for her old drink. I'm just trying to think of ANYthing that might possibly work. Guest guest
Thanks, that helps. I just finished the cooking of the spinach, squash, zucchini, more pears, carrots, and I don't remember what else! (I'm exhausted!) The avocatos I picked, well, weren't as ripe as I thought. Yes, the coconut, will tackle that tomorrow... I'm just so nervous about this. I find myself questioning whether I'm helping or hurting her. Logic tells me this diet is good, but if she refuses food and liquids, that's bad. I'm keeping her under her pediatrician's close care, but she isn't so familiar with this diet. She's recommended Juice Plus as a vitamin and I read that that's SCD illegal. I know she wants to help, but I shoot everything down that she suggests because of the strickness of this diet. Forgive me for asking this, but is there anyone (doctors, or such), that deal with this as a specialty? Guest guest
Who are you seeing now? We use Dr. O'Hara in CT. She also has a registered dietician on her staff. They new Elaine personally, and are very familiar with what is and isn't SCD legal. Vikki(the RD) is always careful to find an SCD legal form of a supp or med that Dr. O'Hara wants us to use. The only illegal we are using right now is Valtrex, and that's because it simply cannot be compounded into an SCD legal form. Even with that, she didn't RX it until we'd been SCD for seven months, and after several different labs to make sure that he really did need this antiviral. Vikki does see clients who aren't patients of Dr. O'Hara. She can do a phone consultation with you if you aren't close by. Let me know if you want her contact info. Guest guest
We're seeing a pediatrician here in Columbus, Ohio. I really like her and she did take some time to read up on the diet. But I'd like to consult with someone with more background on SCD and who can tell me when it's time to worry. Please, I'd love to have Dr O'Hara and her dietician's info. This doesn't mean that I don't find your advise and that of this groups invaluable, I REALLY appreciate the help and will continue (you can count on it!) to use this support. I just have to do all I can for Dorthia. Thank you! Guest guest
I completely understand where you're coming from. I have the same mindset that I must do whatever it takes to help our son recover. You can get tons of info on Dr. O'Hara, Vikki, and all of the other staff on their web site www.drohara.com In the " about us " section you can read the bios on all of the staff. There's a lot of other helpful info at the site as well. Of course, there will also be contact info.
