Guest guest
Hi, I just checked back into the blog. I was away on vacation and very busy the last couple of weeks. I was on vacation in niagra falls, canada. The trip was beautiful. I had soooo many people stare at my sons helmet. Most of them didnt know why he was wearing a hard hat. I just smiled back to them as they kept on stearing. My son got all the attention he needed. I wanted to share my second story, I went to take my 4 year old son to the bus and held my son ely (61/2 months old, 19 lbs, 6 weeks in starband) in my hand. As i wanted to cross back the street i triped and fell forward together with my baby in my hand. His head went bang to the floor. Thank god that he had on a helmet. He was crying a lot after that but had no bruise. The helmet just saved him. I got away with a bruised foot, swolen ankle and a scraped knee. I am still limping pretty much. I couldnt walk the first 2 days. But I am really happy that he wore a band, and sometimes u never know why he was supposed to get the band... I am doing better day by day with my foot. Just wanted to share the story. btw i cant wait to graduate the helmet. Ely is very fussy and frustrated with it. He keeps on pulling on his ears and rubbing his face. He has a very chubby face and it gets pretty squashed up in the helmet. Also he has a bad rash by his sideburns. I spoke to his pediatrician about graduating he said that we should still hang in there a little longer until his head gets a little more rounded up. The orthotist told me that he will graduate in around 4 weeks that is when he will do the next scan. miriam mom to ely 61/2 months 6 weeks in starband
Guest guest
Jen, Your email made me laugh. I was the same way...I got more sensitive about the stares with each passing week my son was in the band. I would have expected it to work the other way - more sensitive in the beginning and less sensitive over time. Thanks for sharing your experience. I thought I might have been the only one who felt that way! My son graduated from his DOC Band on 8/5/09 and we may be doing a second band. I really don't want to do another one, but in the last couple of weeks, I've started to feel like we stopped too soon. He did great in the band...he was a trooper. The whole process was easy and we're really glad we did it. Now, though, after a few weeks of a break, I'm just not eager to start the process again...especially because of all the stares and double-takes. The other thing that really gets me is that hardly anyone talked to him (when we were out and about) while he was in the band. Prior to the band, people fussed over him all the time - and as soon as he got his band off, they started fussing over him again. (He's really chubby and gets lots of cheek-pinching and such.) I know none of that matters in the long run, so I have to keep reminding myself of that and keep it all in perspective. And thank goodness, the process is only temporary. If we do another band, I know from our previous experience that he will likely do just fine. It's his mommy that will have a bit of a harder time. (Thank you for letting me vent my frustration here!) For those just starting the process or considering it, don't be fearful or discouraged. The results we got were great and we're so glad we started treatment when we did. There are just parts of the process I found I had to muddle through...and for me, that had much to do with the reaction of the general public when we were out and about. But well worth putting up with that for a season for the results that come with the band. Jill mom to Cade (8.5 months, DOC Band 6/18/09-8/05/09) Texas > > That's great that the band saved his head. Sebastian always hits his head because he is just crawling and standing. He's going to have a rude awakening when it comes off! The band can definitely come in handy though. > > I'm sure everyone one on here knows how you feel about the stares. I stare back at people when they do that. I think I've become more sensitive to it as time has gone by. I don't know why. If someone makes a joke about the helmet to try to get me to to tell them about it I won't volunteer info. If they ask me directly what it is for I'm glad to tell them. One time when I was in a bad mood someone asked about it and I told them it was because we drop him all the time. They didn't even question it!!! > > Anyway, glad you had a nice vacation and the band protected your baby during that fall. I hope you are feeling better. > > Jen > > mom to Sebastian 8 months (17 weeks in Starband) > > > > band saved my son > > Date: Fri, 11 Sep 2009 03:12:51 -0000 > > > > > > Hi, I just checked back into the blog.
