Guest guest
Well.... yes, they are listed as legal. That's true. I apologize (especially to Gerardo) for my fervent and adamant reaction earlier on the pork rinds issue. However, with that said, we have seen kids come to this list..... severely self-limited eaters prior to SCD, used to eating lots of potato chips and other such junky, snacky foods..... who've started SCD but soon self-limited themselves to just a few " legal " foods.... and consequently did not make much headway on SCD. I'm thinking of one little boy in particular who was eating almost an entire bag of pork rinds every day..... and almost nothing else, except bananas and pears. He did NOT do well at all.... but the mother kept giving him the pork rinds, insisting that " this is all he will eat " . I kept trying to convince her that he needed a balance of other more nutritious foods.... or he was not going to make much progress. I don't think they stayed with SCD.... I have no idea how he is today. I just kept thinking that this little boy (a 6 yr old, as I recall) could not have been going to the store on his own and buying bags of pork rinds every day.... someone was providing them. I suppose it was easier than fighting with him. Anyway, ever since then, I have been VERY leary of the inclusion of pork rinds for children (and this is primarily a children's SCD list).... especially those who are new to the diet. I do respect Elaine.... and I normally defer to her wisdom and judgement on what is and is not legal.... but I think that if I could discuss this with her now, she would agree that pork rinds are probably not a wise choice for a daily food.... especially for a child who is new to SCD. If you've been on the diet a while and are doing well, including an OCCASIONAL snack of pork rinds is probably just fine. Keep in mind that they are pure fat.... and salt. You have only been on SCD one month, as an adult.... and I would still (my personal opinion only) caution you to include these only rarely, and not at ALL if you are having any bothersome symptoms. That is just based on my past experience. best wishes, Patti I am confused, plain pork rinds are listed as legal on the legal/illegal list... Advanced food, sure. Not very worthy nutritionally, definitely. I like pork rinds especially with homemade pico de gallo. I grew up in Mexico, which is probably why I like them so much. I checked the legal/illegal list and plain pork rinds are supposed to be OK. If they are not, I will stop eating them. I don't eat them often but there is a bag in the pantry. Pork rinds are a " trigger " food for me, a food that triggers uncontrolled eating so I can really relate to what you wrote. I have a few legal foods that I have trouble controlling my portions. I still struggle to identify some of the more subtle symptons, I have had untreated, severe IBS since childhood, having digestive problems is my " normal " . I will slow down and pay more attention to what my body is trying to tell me. Ana Karina IBS, SCD 1 month > >
Guest guest
Patti, firmly agree with you based on my own experience. The pork rinds are cooked with various oils, the one that gave me the most grief - peanut oil. Also the high temp used in cooking is probably not too good for the rinds. Sam.
