Guest guest
Hi, I believe what you would be told if you had evaluation today is that the AVERAGE survival post lung transplant is 5 to 6 years. I wish they would look at that number again and be sure that is correct. Most people I know are 7 or 8 years out. But then again who knows across the U.S. Post lung tx survival is based on some known factors and some unknown factors. The known being, if you are not compliant with meds or treatments, you could shorten your time. The other known is that if you keep getting infections, it could shorten your time. So that is why most centers, but not all are rules that you need to follow closely post tx in regards to hygiene. Easy to do, and common sense, but when some people are told " do this, do that " they seem to need to go against the grain and rebel.....not sure what they are rebeling against.... they are the ones who will lose out. The unknown is something that is called BOS - Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome - or sometimes referred to as chronic rejection. It is an unknown why this occurs in lungs, but what basicaclly happens is that scarring forms in the small airways and then you start losing PFT functions. You dont get CF again, but simply short of breath and cough, but not like a CF cough. Joanne > Assuming all goes well, how long is the survival rate after a > transplant? > Joanne M. Guest guest
Survival post-surgery is like 96%, so that's not the hard part. Many people here live 10-20 years breathing easy, it's a miracle. I would be in my 40's, but would breathe well the whole time. I can't complain about that. That will be the happiest day for me, that call. We'll see. I pray for those lungs, and for those donors that lose their lives.
