Guest guest
If she was eating all kinds of illegals.... green bananas, etc.... then she really did not do SCD properly. Yes, she should go back and do the intro diet and begin with all easy-to-digest foods.... peeled and cooked fruits and veggies. I am concerned about this statement you made: <<She is feeling totally zapped since the diet deprives you of all carbs and she has no energy>> SCD does NOT deprive you of all carbs..... on the contrary, there are plenty of good carbohydrates included on this diet. If she is not eating any carbs, she is not doing SCD correctly. Some good carbs for beginners are.... ripe bananas, cooked carrots, cooked yellow squashes, cooked pears and apples, etc, etc. If she is feeling really awful and low-energy, yes... it *could* be due to die-off. Die-off would not normally last for two whole months, though it can go on for a few weeks, if there was really an imbalance of bad bacteria in the gut. Is she taking epsom salts baths? Activated charcoal supplements? Those can help with detoxing from die-off. We would need to know exactly what she's eating (including any supplements) and how it's prepared to help her further. Patti Intro Diet questions and my story - please help! Hi all please allow me to share my story real quickly since I am new to this group. I am not on the diet and I dont have IBD, but my girlfriend is on the SCD for her crohns that she's had for 20 years. she is on the Long Island listserve and I thought I'd join this group for my own support network. she's done the diet for 2 years now, but never did the intro, and jumped right in to almost all foods, without peeling veggies, seeding veggies, and she ate " green " bananas - lots of illegal things. She quit the green bananas about 2 months ago, and she's been having a flare for nearly 2 months now. we're not sure if its a flare, or just die-off. is a 2 month die-off period too long? She's very scared and is now doing the Intro Diet for 3 days, which she never did. She is feeling totally zapped since the diet deprives you of all carbs and she has no energy. So my questions are: 1-is this normal to have die off for 2 months after 2 years on the diet or should she be worried about her health? she thinks its bad news and might need to take more serious measures and 2-is the intro diet really that zapping? She just feels awful and can barely leave the house thanks - i look forward to meeting some of you and hearing your input and your stories too. cheers tim

It is about consuming the type of carbohydrates that are easy to digest. I think your friend should be getting answers on the LI List or should join here and not get info via a 3rd party even though you are well meaning in being supportive. There are many days when my carb intake is higher percentage than protein or fat. Please have her submit her food journal for three days in a row as it sounds like she is not following the diet proprerly. Starting off with the green bananas was a mistake and she may be making others. durint he past two years. We will do our best to help her follow the diet cxorrectly. Carol F. Guest guest
I can't answer your question about the two month die off. I can tell you that what she is feeling right now while doing intro very likely could be severe die off. Yes, many people are completely floored when first starting SCD...which I would say is what she is doing since you've already acknowledged that she didn't implement it properly to begin with. Many experience vomitting, complete exhaustion, flu like symptoms, ect. Meleah Intro Diet questions and my story - please help! Guest guest
thanks everyone! I want to clarify that we totally understand this isnt a low carb diet. I meant that the Intro part of the diet is somewhat low carb since she's only eating the gelatin w/ a bit of pineapple juice for carbs and a bit of carrots. She has a very good understanding of the diet as she has support from various sources (people, LI, books, phone support). She did make the green banana mistake, as well as never doing the Intro diet, however! But what we're truly looking for is why there would be 2 months of significant symptoms after being on the diet for 2 years already. Would the green bananas have that much of an effect? Hopefully starting over w/ the Intro diet and following the ramp up to a " T " will help her out. The other concerning thing is that she has suffered from serious fatique and is generally worn out at the end of most days. She hasnt been able to hold a job because that stress and activity would make her feel awful, low energy, dizzy. Is this normal that after 2 years on the diet she'd still feel so zapped and tired out? Here are the foods she eats on a normal day: b-fast: soft boiled eggs Dry Curd Cottage Cheese and homemade Yogurt and Banana zucchini and yellow pepper sauteed (not peeled) almond flour nut muffin lunch: Turkey burger spagetti squash and acorn squash DCCC/Yogurt/Banana Dinner: some kind of meat (chicken, beef, fish) broccoli, green beans spagetti and acorn squash DCCC/yogurt/Banana almond flour nut muffin Snacks (2 per day) almond butter apple walnuts Thanks all Tim --- robin wrote: > I can't answer your question about the two month die > off. Guest guest
Hi Tim, I'd like to start by saying I thinking it is fantastic what you are doing this for your girlfriend - this kind of support is immeasurable <<But what we're truly looking for is why there would be > 2 months of significant symptoms after being on the > diet for 2 years already. Would the green bananas > have that much of an effect? >> Unfortunately yes, having illegals even if they are only green bananas can have that much of an effect. Sometimes what will happen is that the easiest to kill microbes die off first and what you are left with are the strongest nastiest microbes. << Hopefully starting over > w/ the Intro diet and following the ramp up to a " T " will help her out. >> Absolutely! << The other concerning thing is that she has suffered > from serious fatique and is generally worn out at the > end of most days. Is this normal that after 2 > years on the diet she'd still feel so zapped and tired > out? >> What kind of bowel symptoms does she suffer from? Is she having a lot of diarrhea? Bloody stools constipation? Number of bm's/day/week? Any other symptoms you can think of (rashes etc..) Your answers to these questions will help us guide the answers we give you. Is she taking any meds for the Crohn's? Any supplements? Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23 yrs mom of and
