Lorretta,

I had to go on disability because of the pancreatitis (and other health

problems) in Jan. 2003. I was able to work for some time though. I

started having problems in 1986, diagnosed chronic in 1997 and on

disability in 2003. Unfortunately, in my case, the medications killed my

concentration and accurracy and both were highly needed in my job. How

quickly the disease occurs seems to vary per person, so it's not

something any of us can really quantify. If you really want the degree,

I personally say go for it. I did for my bachelor's degree. I also got a

Stafford Loan and if you are on disability, you can get the loan

" forgiven " , I've forgotten the actual word they used for it, but

basically you don't have to pay it back because you aren't going to be

able to work. You just need your doctor to fill out a form stating that

you aren't going to be able to repay the loan ( this is done after you

start paying back the loan). So if you aren't able to go back to work

like you want to, you do have some options regarding repayment. I'm in

the process of trying to get this done with my loan, though I'm over

halfway done to paying it off.

Loretta,

good for you for going for the degree. I also understand the need for a

break. I took a year off while I was getting my bachelor's degree. It

helped alot. I'll have your mom in my prayers that her back surgery goes

well. We all need support when we go through something as drastic as

surgery. Let us know how she does.
