Ilene,

For yourself, increased gas and so forth is more than likely due to die off. As

the bad pathogens are leaving the body, they will give off an increase of

toxins. Are you using an SCD legal probiotic? It is very important to be

providing the gut with the necessary good flora to replace the bad as it dies

off. I would suspect that the eczema is also contributed to die off, but I

can't say for sure. I have discovered in the past week that eczema is allergy

related(sensitivity may be more appropriate terminology), but it can be food,

environmental, or both. My toddler broke out with eczema almost a year ago. It

started out mild, got increasingly worse, then began to improve when we removed

grains. He recently broke out in a horrible case of it all over his body, and

no food changes had been made. I then found out that it can be environmentally

related as well through a lady who told me that they discovered their son's

eczema was triggered by carpet cleaners. I realized that my son's eczema has

never been on his face, his diaper area, or ahdns. These are places where

clothing never touches him. I switched to Dreft, and rewashed all of his

clothing and bedding in it. The eczema started to clear up. It is almost gone

now. I was telling this to a friend who is a pediatric nurse. She said that

she recommends parents use All Clear rather than Dreft is they're trying to

determin an eczema trigger because Dreft does still have some perfuming agents

in it. Remember too, that her eczema may not be triggered by the wheat, grains,

sugars, ect. I could be triggered by an SCD legal food that her body just

doesn't tolerate right now. She may never tolerate it, or she may heal to the

point of being able to ingest it some day. That's why it is so important to

keep a food journal of what she eats, her bowel habits, eczema, ect. Hopefully,

you can find the trigger for her. I really don't know what to say about the

honey situation, but a more experienced SCDer can help with that.

Hi. My family started SCD two and a half weeks ago. Mostly, it was for my son

(7) who

has salicylate sensitivity (we discovered this by being on the Feingold

Diet--which we've

been on for 2 years) but I thought my daughter's (she's 5) sporadic eczema

might be

helped by it and my recent food sensitivities (intermittent reflux,

intermittent hives on my

bottom and sometimes my head--I think maybe it's a salicylate issue, but I'm

not sure).

So we all decided to heal our guts and now I have a ton of questions.

1) ME: I used to vary between normal stools and slight constipation, but

generally normal

stools. I have had increasing gas issues in the past year, but I it seemed to

be related to

either wheat or milk, so I had cut them both down with pretty good results. So

I'm

surprised that I am now having major digestive issues: a lot of gas and pale

stools. Are

the pale stools normal? I know they can be a sign of serious problems, but is

it common

in the early days of SCD? Why do I suddenly have a lot of gas?

2) My daughter: Right after we started, she got a HORRENDOUS flare up of

eczema. It has

always been pretty rare, but if it flared up, it was a small rough, pink, 1

inch patch on her

wrist or something. Now, her hands are totally raw and boken skin and a little

bleeding.

Now it's gotten somewhat better, but they still hurt. I tried putting Aquaphor

on--that

hurt. Olive oil was ok, but she doesn't like having something on her hands. I

read that

there is a connection between the gut and eczema, but does this make sense?

3) My son: he is really sensitive to salicylates and he hasn't been able to

tolerate honey

(not even tupelo). I've been using " 100% pure dextrose " since I read that

Elaine Gottchall

said it is probably okay. I want to move towards honey, but we tried it last

night (after 2

and half weeks on SCD) and he had a crying fit tonight. So I'm a little

discouraged. His

behavior (which is his " reaction " ) has gotten worse on SCD--which I know often

happens.

I know some of this must be die-off. (He does " explosions " a lot of the

time--definitely

out of place) and this has increased a lot. How long can I expect this to

last? Also, could

the yogurt be making his explosions worse? And has anyone had experience with

reversing a salicyate sensitivity? I be happier if we could do honey, for

sure, but tomato

sauce would be divine! I'm sure that every person is different--and someone

just wrote

that we can't know someone's gut status, and I understand that. But is there

any idea of a

time frame for *some* improvement?

Thank you soooo much! I know this was long!

Eileen,

First thing I want to mention is.....

You are in the very beginning stages, during which you are bound to see symptoms

flare up as a result of bacteria and yeast dying off. Did you start with the

Intro Diet for a couple of days? Are you using all peeled and cooked fruits and

veggies.... and keeping things simple and easy to digest?

Secondly, I have been around here a few years, including while Elaine was still

alive and participating here on the list with us..... and I have NEVER heard her

okay pure dextrose to be used as a general sweetener. I just now went to her

website and read the brief comment she has there in her legal/illegal list about

dextrose..... but I would not read that as a nod to using this as a sweetener

for those who can't use sugar.

This is from her " Knowledge Base " :

<<The problem with the dextrose and fructose which is being sold as a granulated

form as well as the dextrose contained in commercial products is that it is not

pure dextrose which should be the same as the single sugar glucose found in

fruits and honey.

However, since it is made commercially from cornstarch, the product turns out to

be a mixture of many sugars: short chain polysaccharides and trisaccharides and

disaccharides. However, it is still being labeled as dextrose.

Furthermore, any sugar which is extracted is handled differently by the gut than

the same sugar in whole food such as an apple. >>

********

I would have to say that we absolutely never recommend dextrose being used as a

sweetener. The only time it is actually okay, as far as I know, is the tiny

amount that is added to most iodized salt. She has told us not to worry about

that.

For your son, I would switch to making pear sauce..... and using that as a

sweetener. You can also use saccharin, which, according to Elaine Gottschall, is

perfectly safe.

For all the symptoms you guys are having right now, I would expect this to be

temporary.... as you go through die-off. Epsom salts baths can help pull out

the toxins. Activated charcoal supplements can also help mop up die-off toxins

in the gut.

Let's make sure that all the foods you're eating are legal and prepared

appropriately for beginners. Can you list what you're all eating presently.....

and whether or not you did Intro?

HI,

My family came to this diet from fiengold and C/F G/F. My son is very

sensitive to salicyates still stage 1 fruit and vegetables. After about a year

of avoiding feingold stage two we still couldn't handle them. We have been on

this diet science July 06. and after for months in we were having lost of

problems. I talked with a food counsel and restarted Nov 9. we were making a lot

of mistakes. Raw fruit way to fast.

I know how you feel about wanting the tomatoes and honey they are still a

problem for us but the last time we tried them he was able to eat it for a

couple of days. be for if he had tomatoes it used too be instant behavior

problem.(out of control behavior and anger) i have also noticed that now if m

son gets markers on his skin he doesn't have a immidiate reaction. He was

soooooo sensitive to everything. So i believe we are making huge progress its

just that he is so hi per sensitive we have a ways to go. We will not try honey

or other foods high in salicyates until a school brake its not fair to him or

his teacher. it would make cooking a lot easier but I try to just remind myself

it will get easier. we don't have very much verity in our meals and its hard

but I see improvement. I wall probably feel like I have won the Lotty when he

can handle thees foods but i know it will come.

Hi .

Uh oh--it sounds like we're making a lot of mistakes, too. After a few days on

the intro

diet, I jumped right into more advanced foods for everyone. I thought it would

be okay

since we didn't have diahrea or anything like that, but I guess I was wrong.

It seems like half the recipes have honey in them. What do you eat? I'm going

to try to

sweeten with pear sauce, like Patti recommended.

On the upside, I am feeling more energetic! :-)

Hi, for the eczema, try putting (BOUDREAUX'S BUTTE PASTE ) ON IT and rub

deeply into the infected bumpy area. It really works, can be found in the

diaper rash isle. Let us know if this helps.''
