Guest guest
I would appreciate some advice today. My girl has had the croup since Sat. night. My pc crashed, so I'm using a friend's. We barely have any $ at all even to eat with so, I can't buy anything new right now. I've been giving her chicken (bone) broth, water, ice cubes, freeze pops, and epsom salts baths. She has also had some lemon balm tea that Summer was nice enough to send us and I keep bringing her in the br to inhale the shower mist. She only has the fevers which are low at night. I have also boiled some water and put some eucalyptus oil in it. She doesn't take any tylenol or motrin for any reason. Should I give her antivirals or just let her body work through it on it's own? Thanks for any help. Jenn & K --------------------------------- Everyone is raving about the all-new Yahoo! Mail beta.
Guest guest
Our ped has never given meds for crupe. He tells us that the best thing is the steamy hot shower treatment, and hot lemon water. Both relax the broncial muscles to relieve the coughing. Of course, keep the humidifier going in her room. Meleah what's best for the croup? I would appreciate some advice today. My girl has had the croup since Sat. night. My pc crashed, so I'm using a friend's. Guest guest
The best remedy I've ever found for croup.... even before I knew about SCD.... is a home-made cough syrup made from honey and powdered ginger. 2 Tablespoons of honey 1/4 teaspoon of powdered ginger (the kind used for baking) Mix thoroughly. Give about 1/2 teaspoon to 1 full teaspoon as needed (every couple of hours is fine).... The child can eat it right off the spoon, or mixed in warm water like a tea. If you do it that way, it's even better if you add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and just let them sip it. The ginger makes it a bit spicy... so my young children always did better taking a dose all at once off the spoon. This remedy was given to me by a registered nurse, who got it from her grandfather, who was an old-fashioned country doctor. It works better than ANY over-the-counter cough syrup that's out there.... and it's SCD legal! Patti what's best for the croup? I would appreciate some advice today. Guest guest
She only coughs during the night. So, I will try this later and let you know how our night went tomarrow. Last night was terrible. The ginger is used as an anti-viral also. I forgot about that one. She is in good spirits. Her nose is running non-stop. She has been carrying tissues around in her pocket. I guess we could put tampons in her nostrils:) LOL! Thanks for the advice Patti. Guest guest
Thanks Meleah. We do use a humidifier too. Forgot to add that. This group is one of the best in answering quick questions when there are problems. I posted on a few other borads but, didn't get any replys. Guest guest
The other thing works well for the night coughs, which can be so scary and intense, is cold air. When our sons had croup and were up with the cough, our doctor recommended we bundle them up and bring them out on the porch. The cold wet air helps stop the spasm that causes the cough. No meds, just a lot of what you're doing, soup and rest and steam and cold air. the doctor warned us that the second and third nights are often worse than the first, and then it usually gets better. Good luck and hopes for a quick recovery! , mom to 8 year old ds, UC since 4/05, SCD since 10/06.
Guest guest
I want to thank everyone for their imput when I needed help last week. Kali is doing much better. We didn't use any meds just some love and SCD intro. foods. She does still have a congested cough. I, on the other hand, have a sinus infection that I'm trying to throw off. It hit me while I was caring for Kali. I just did the same thing for me that I have for her and got some extra zzzzz's. I was a bit worried as we do not vax anymore and the whooping cough has hit this area pretty hard lately. Thanks again everyone and have a Merry Christmas!!
