Guest guest
It is normal for the band to seesaw around on the head, during the beginning of treatment. This can also happen after an adjustment. I do see what you are talking about, concerning the right ear. I wouldn't worry too much about it, it's not pushing the ear out. The band looks like it may be a bit low on the right side by his eye. Maybe they can shave some of that area, so it's not hitting so low. As your LO grows, the fit should get better. Also, the space in the back, behind the velcro is normal. The head won't widen from that area, everything is " built into the band, " or so I was told. The outward design may not look " right " to you based on his head shape, but trust me, CT knows how to design these bands. I'm sure it will be fitting better after your adjustment on Tues. Guest guest
Christy, It looks like the DOC Band needs to be turned to the left (if that's his right ear) a bit. I've had issues like that and it's when I don't put on my son's band properly. I make sure the back is fitting better before velcro-ing the band. You'll get it... I'm pretty confident that this is not a fit issue. Robyn If you're having issues, ask your clinician to show you how to put the band on/off when you're there. > > > Hi all! > > We are going on one week of wearing the DOC band and we go back on > Tuesday for our first follow up appointment. Guest guest
They can carve a little off that sideburn so taht it's not touching his ear, but it appears fine otherwise. The space behind the ear is not an issue, we had it as well. The sideburn isn't even really an issue unless it's pushing on the ear from behind (making the ear stick out). But it appears to be an easy fix on Tuesday. Guest guest
Thank you everyone!! I just wanted to get some expert opinions before I went to the next appointment. I really like my clinician, but she is kinda the type to sort of blow off any concerns that are not absolutely evident. Robyn, I do feel like it is " user error " sometimes... It is especially hard when he is sleeping because he tosses and turns and cannot get comfortable and I know that the band is not staying put. I am just hoping that it is doing its job overnight and making it worth the pain (for both of us) of getting up at least 4 times a night to nurse and soothe him back to sleep. , I am going to CT in ndale, VA. Thank you all again! > > > Hi all! > > We are going on one week of wearing the DOC band and we go back on > Tuesday for our first follow up appointment. Guest guest
I know it helped me to put the band on right the first time if I lined up the one ear with the ear hole (opposite the opening) while sliding it on. Also, it helps if they are sitting upright. You can sit on the floor with him between your legs, (or if he's in a exersaucer or high chair yet) with that ear/side facing you and then you have a little bit more control while putting it on. It gets easier! Pretty soon, you'll be a pro at it! Guest guest
Count me as another with a DOC band that had to be remade. It does happen. The techs will say over and over how great things are going and how they see improvement because that's their script. They also just follow the routine of shaving even when it might not be needed. I had to push to keep them from shaving every time we went in even when the measurements showed the baby had not grown any. Shaving too much results in an ill-fitting band that loses the holding points. It seemed to me like the techs were like everyone on this board seems to be: so certain that nothing could ever go wrong in a DOC band so they just went through the motions. Remember that with cranial tech an actual orthotist never sees your baby in the band except in photos. Keep expressing your concerns. Also, , I've now had 2 bands and neither had the ear holes lined up symmetrically because my baby's ears were too far off for that. The helmets are not symmetrical since they are made custom to the child. The combination of asymmetrical outer shell and how the lining is asymmetrically carved at the end is supposed to result in a (close to) symmetrical shape internally. Christy, I've looked at your photos and when our band did something similar they cut away the back of the sideburn so it would not touch the ear. Sounds like they did that for you too. Personally if I had it to do over again, I'd ask them not to unless it was actually leaving a mark. You need the sideburns for stability. They help keep the band positioned as it should be. I worry that cutting them down contributes to the poor fit. If the band doesn't fit well in the beginning, it definitely won't after they start to mess with it. You have to treat the helmet people like every other medical professional who said things would be fine. They can be wrong too. Don't just go along with the when they say everything is going great. If you don't see the improvement they are describing continue to express concern. Your kid's head is more important than their feelings. Good luck, Eli > > > > > Glad it went well!
