Guest guest
Hello all. Well after suffering for 2 & 1/2 weeks of bad pain and vomitting I finally went into the emergency room last night. I hate going into the hospital. Once I got in they did a blood sugar check since my nurse thought it should be done due to my having pancreatitis. It was only 2.5 (i live in Canada so i'm not sure what unit was measured in). So they gave me a dextrose straight into my IV. My question is, is this something I should be concerned about? My doc has never mentioned checking blood sugars. He's not even convinced yet I have pancreatitis since all tests show no damage to my pancreas. He is still taking my gall bladder out in January. And he's ordering an EUS. But was my blood sugar low due to the fact that i haven't eaten much in the last 2 & 1/2 weeks or could it be showing something else? Thanks, Jen. Guest guest
Jen, I dont know what the level of 2.5 is in your institution but if you say it is low, then it must be. I dont know how low that is at all and hope it is in the moderate level. You did not say whether or not you had lost conscienceness or not. Being mal nurished and dehydrated can take a toll of the body. You can have a decrease in many of the minerals your body needs glucose is one and, sodium, magnesium, calcium and potassium. A low potassium in particular can be very bad for the cardiac muscle. Try taking in more fliuds even if its just a popcicle. I would be sure to discuss this with your doctor but having a drop in blood sugar does not mean diabetes. But talk with your doctor. Warmly, Chrissy > > Hello all. Guest guest
, I found a web page that converts glucose readings (it was one that Heidi had suggested before). So in American terms I was a 45. I still don't know if that is abnormally low or not. I didn't lose consiousness. In fact I couldn't even tell my blood sugar was low. I am gonna talk to my regular doctor about it though. Thanks for the response and suggestions. Jen
Guest guest
Well the ideal range in the US would 80-120 as normal. 45 is fairly low; I'm surprised you didnt feel lighthead or dizzy. If you hadn't then, you no doubt would have soon enough. Get much lower then that you could have passed out. It not something you want to mess with. I would certainly discuss with your doc but I would also strongly reccommend you get something in your belly to get you well nourished and stronger. I was diagnosed a few years ago with Kwashiokor, severe malnutrition, my hair turned orange and everything. It took a while to figure out just what I can and can not eat with all the variables. Drank a lot of slimfast; it is healthy. You have to do what ever you can to get yourself strong and especially if you are going to have surgery soon. I have been making myself eat a little more protein, calcium and veggies so that I can be as strong as I can before I have the surgery next month. You need to get something in your stomach. I eat a lot of low fat ice cream, its pretty good too; try those; but get something in your stomach. Please keep me posted on how you are doing. Are you working again? Your a nurse right. Me too. I really miss it a lot too. Feel better, Chrissy > > , > > I found a web page that converts glucose readings (it was one that > Heidi had suggested before). So in American terms I was a 45.
