Guest guest
I sent this to you off list as well, ..... just copying this here, too.... Looks like you are not using nut flours yet... is that right? If not, and if he can have nuts, I would definitely try to incorporate some in the form of a muffin or something. I would recommend starting with pecan flour. You can order it from Digestive Wellness www.digestivewellness.com/ Almond flour would be okay, too.... though some autistic kids have issues with the salicylates in almonds, so you might know already whether he would tolerate that. A little nut flour muffin added to his diet might help loosen him up. Does he get a magnesium supplement every day? I mean, other than the oral mag sulfate? Magnesium citrate has a laxative effect. I think it's too soon for raw foods for him..... so I would nix the salads for now. And don't do raw pears!! Make sure they're cooked. Also, you wrote: <<some honey and lots (about 4-6 a day). >> Did you leave out a word? 4-6 whats a day? Bananas, maybe? I am guessing it's bananas. If so..... you might consider this.... both ripe bananas and cooked apples are a bit " binding " for some people. In other words, they will tend to firm up the stool, which comes in handy for people with diarrhea. But, when the opposite is the issue, you may need to pull back on the amounts of those items. Possibly switch to giving more pears (cooked!!).... baked pear halves are GREAT, by the way. Just put them cut side down in a baking dish with a bit of water.... sprinkle on cinnamon and bake for about 30-40 minutes. Peaches, papaya and mango are good fruit choices, too. Peaches can be found in the frozen section..... but you'd then need to cook them. Papaya is really GOOD for the digestion.... needs to be ripe, and then lightly steamed. I would rather see you give him cooked broccoli (if he tolerates it okay) than raw salads. Are you using other supplements? And are you certain they are all legal? Sometimes the DAN docs suggest supps that are not legal.... especially in the probiotics. Hope that helps... Patti How long can we do intro and beginning SCD? I have not had much access to a computer for the last few months. I have been on pecanbread list, but have been unable to follow it much. My son, age 18 yo, is diagnosed with severe autism. He is low-functioning, non-verbal (basically). He has been on the SCD since 9/12/06. I have tried to follow the guidelines on pecanbread, etc. re introductory foods, etc. We have been unable to make much progress. Unless I give him oral epsom salts, he is constipated. He is being seen by a DAN! (Defeat Autism Now!) dr. here since Nov. who recommends SCD, but I don't think she has much experience with problems with it. We started him on Armour thyroid the first part of December but we have still not made much progress. We are now increasing the thyroid hoping to improve his bowel function. My concern is that I may be keeping him on introductory foods too long. We are only doing zucchini, green beans, butternut squash with well-cooked meats, the 24 hr. raw goat yogurt, cooked apples & /or cooked or raw (very ripe) pears, occasional avocado, very rare salad and broccoli and some honey and lots (about 4-6 a day). We have tried cooked prunes without much luck and he doesn't seem to like them. I am concerned about keeping him on such a narrow variety of foods and wonder if I could increase him to more things like broccoli (which I have done for an occasional meal). So my question for those who have the experience: Can I go ahead and increase him to more foods, even though he is still having constipation (or else his stools are loose--sometimes, explosive). Remember he is now almost 5 months on SCD. Oh, yes, recently he has seemed to be doing worse. His behavior has gone back to a lot of things he had done in the past and which I have not seen for quite a few months while on the SCD. Thanks for any input. Guest guest
Well , I see some foods that I believe you should pull out. I think that it is too soon to be using raw fruits and veggies(except ripe avocado or ripe banan) no matter how ripe they are. These could definitely be hindering progress. I'm not sure if you should do the brocolli either. Have you looked at the stages chart on pecanbread.com under the food preparation section? That might give you some ideas of other fruits or veggies to introduce. I don't think that the variety is all that terrible...boring maybe, but not unhealthy. I'd stick with easy to digest things like the carrots, zucchini, spinach, green beans, winter squashes(acorn, butternut, buttercup, ect), pears, apples, banana, maybe some peaches. Remember to peal, seed, and cook all of the fruits and veggies except the banan and avocado. The behavior issues that are resurfacing could be new die off occuring. Also, some parents report that their children just can't tolerate honey or banana for some reason. Have you tried prune nectar to get his bowels moving? I haven't been able to buy it commercially, but Elaine also gives direction for boiling down prune juice if you can't give the prune nectar. Check the BTVC web site for constepation protocall. It will have instructions on concentrating the prune juice. Meleah SCD 05/06 iel 3.5yrs. ASD, Ethan 5yrs., Mark 20mths., both NT How long can we do intro and beginning SCD? Guest guest
Hi , I once gave free counseling to a mother who used thyroid medication and it made her son worse. When she eliminated the thyroid medication, her son got better. However, I am not sure of the brand name of the thyroid medication, Some brands might be OK. Try the electrolyte drink. Do not use a commercial one. Many Pedialyte and Electrolyte drinks are made with dextrose. Unfortunately, it is difficult to be sure if the dextrose is unadulterated (see Dextrose). It is easy to make your own. Electrolyte drink 1 quart boiled water 2 tbsp. honey 1/4 tsp. of salt 1/4 tsp.baking soda Can be kept in refrigerator for 24 hours, and then a new batch should be made. It doesn't taste great but you can add a splash of juice to give it a better flavor. Mimi
