Welcome to our group. You should not continue on the intro diet for more than

five days. It sounds like you've passed this point. If so, then you should

gradually begin adding in new foods. Maybe every three days or so. Make sure

that all foods are pealed, seeded, and well cooked. Yes, definitely look at the

stages chart under the food preparation section of pecanbread.com. It is very

helpful as a guideline. Many parents do wait a month or two before introducing

dairy, and it is best to start with goat yogurt. Many children who cannot

tolerate cow dairy do fine with goat dairy products. After a little while on

goat yogurt with no problems, you certainly could switch to cow if you would

like. Goat yogurt is not a requirement for SCD, but many parents choose to stay

with it.

Tons of questions from Richmond, VA

Hello everyone!

I have been following your comments for the last week and getting

bits and pieces from everyone. My 3-year-old daughter, , was

recently diagnosed with PDD-NOS.

Only two weeks ago we cut all dairy products while we waited for the

almond flour and the yogurt maker. Last week we started with the

intro diet as described in the book, including the cow's milk yogurt

and almond flour bread and cookies as snacks. Then I learned about

the stages and that the yogurt was not an ideal thing to start with.

I only gave her yogurt the first day.

On that day she started with diarrhea and up to this day, her stools

are still very soft and watery.

One more thing. She got a cold on the same day she started the diet.

I gave her tylenol to control the fever. Now she's much better from

her cold, her sleep pattern is almost normal and her behavior has

improved tremendously.

Now, I frankly don't know what to do:

Continue with the intro diet?

When can I start giving her yogourt again?

Should I NOT give her cow's milk yogurt and use goat's milk yogurt

intead because she is in the Autistic spectrum?

Can I still use cow's milk yogurt in the recipes?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Hi Ximena,

As Meleah said, you don't need to stay on the Intro diet for very long. Two days

is the usual recommendation. Some yogurt is included on the traditional SCD

Intro diet in the book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle, so it's okay that you

included it.

For the kids here.... most of them were casein free prior to starting SCD, and

for THEM, we suggest SCD yogurt made from goat milk. If your daughter has not

had problems with cow dairy in the past, it's fine for you to continue using cow

milk yogurt. That is up to you.

If your daughter currently has very loose stools, I would recommend you pull out

the almond flour. This can be difficult to digest for some kids. It would be

best to start with nut BUTTER first.... it's just smoother, less fibrous.

Peanut butter is not recommended generally, as peanuts are actually a legume

which are a more advanced food. Hazelnut or macadamia butter would be good

choices. Cashew butter is more advanced, because cashews are quite starchy

compared to other nuts. Pecan butter would be an excellent choice.... but pecan

butter has to be made at home- isn't commecially available. The best way to make

it would probably be in a blade-type coffee grinder (dedicated to NON coffee

items)... and you would need to add a bit of oil to get a smooth consistency.

Sunflower oil or grape seed oil would be good choices. You can substitute nut

butters for nut flours in any of the recipes.... so she can still have the

cookies and other baked goods. Just wait to introduce the more fibrous almond

flour until her stool firms up a bit.

For her other foods, stick with beginning stage foods.... all cooked fruits and

veggies (ripe banana does not need to be cooked), and easy-to-digest. The

chicken broth is an excellent, healing food.... so include that as much as

possible.
