Guest guest
I was assuming nut butters also had to be homemade -- so that's not the case? - Patti wrote: Really the main products that are a concern are canned fruits and vegetables. Juices are admittedly in that category of being susceptibile to recipe and policy changes. As I first started SCD with my daughter in 2003, I know that Welch's grape and Dole pineapple had been used for many, many years without problems by people on SCD. I know that is no guarantee. Personally, I only give my daughter water with fresh lemon juice and honey added. If she liked to drink other kinds of juice (she doesn't), I would probably give her fresh home-juiced. I happen to own a juicer (a cheapo), so it would be quite easy for me. I wouldn't want to have to worry about trusting a manufacturer........ even one that's proven trustworthy over decades. Honey is not susceptibile in the same way.... labeled 100% pure honey, and labeled " filtered " is fine. For some reason, the labeling standards are different for honey, and not something we have to seek written confirmation on. Same goes for nut butters. Elaine always just specified we had to use the " all natural " type with only salt added. She was not suspicious or worried about nut butters. I wish I could ask her why.... it would be great to have her response on this entire issue right now, but this will just be one more of many, many times I've missed her input in the past 18 months. Anyway, without her around, we have to use our own common sense and make decisions for our family based on the best information we have. That's the best we can do. Patti Re: Trader Joes Juice I guess you would need to obtain letters from ALL companies to determine that ingredients haven't changed, including folks who sell products touted as SCD. Welch's, Dole Pineapple, All honey companies, etc. It seems like it would be an arduous task indeed.

I would be wary of roasted cashew butter as it may have had starch added after the roasting. In this instance it is best seek to information from the company if in doubt. ( I am not volunteering :-) I had a terrible reaction to a roasted cashew butter made in Montreal despite the fact they said (not in writing) no starch was added. (This product is used in SCD baked goods from one source). Marantha Almond uitter raw or roasted, and Nuts4You Organic almond butter (which is terribly expensive) have proved fine for me. Costco carries the Marantha sometimes at a saving. Some of these can also be ordered online. We are advising some precautions regarding peanut butter since it is a legume. Personally, I am fine with it and like President's Choice Organic PB. Nut butter can be made in a food processor or an Omega juicer. A little oil needs to be added to get a nice consistency. Sunflower is very neutral. Again, I like President's Choice Organic as it has no color or flavor. Some P.C. products are available in the U.S. but they originate in Canada. (I have no $ interest in any of the aforementioned products). Carol F. SCD 7 years, celiac
Guest guest
No.... You don't have to make your own nut butter. Except pecan butter, if you want to use it..... because I don't think it's available anywhere to buy. You can purchase nut butters, as long as they are the " old fashioned " , just the nuts and salt kind. Guest guest
Hi Carol, Have you been able to tolerate other commercial cashew butters or homemade cashew butter? Cashews are one of the more " starchy " nuts and the skins left on with most commercial nut butters make them even harder to tolerate and digest. That stuff from Montreal sickened my neighbor who is not even SCD And when it was made into " Fudge Snackeroons, " it was equally awful.. Carol F.
