Hey Hal,

Who was the first president you voted for? Just curious:)

I worked and voted for Adlai son, but Eisenhower was elected in

1952. You had to be 21 to vote then. Hoover was President when I was

born. I thought lin D. Roosevelt would be President my whole life

until he died when I was 14. In1972, I was the first elected (they had

been chosen by the party heads until then) delegate to a Democratic

National Convention from our 2nd CT congressional district. It was an

amazing experience and I was interviewed by Dan Rather on CBS. Former

students of mine who lived all over the country saw me and got in touch.

It was thrilling. My 15 seconds of fame. Phyllis got to sit in the

international ambassador's section, and we became chummy with the

Australian legation. There we were, mixing with the rich and famous.

Nixon was President, and we were surrounded by helmeted and gas masked

military with fixed bayonets the whole time. He had helicopters fly all

night long between our hotels to intimidate us. He won the election by

carrying 49 states. The smears against McGovern worked. McGovern was a

genuine war hero and a professor at Northwestern Univ. where I attended

as an undergrad. He and his wife later became friends of ours, and when

they went to live in London, we followed and spent a year there on

sabbatical at the Univ. of London. Sorry to be so wordy. Hal
