Guest guest
hi there, i have a 2 year old daughter with eczema. she's had it for about 8 months, and before that she had other indicators that she was having food intolerance (although, i didn't realize it at the time)...allergic shiners, mild rash around her anus once in a while, oral thrush as a young baby, and colic symptoms the first 4 months. i have had yeast infections many times in my life as well but never connected it to any particular food i was eating. since realizing she has food/gut issues, we've done the basic elimination diet to no avail, then i took her to an acupuncturist 3 months ago. he is giving her herbs as well as acupuncture (every 2 weeks). she has made some progress. eczema is down by about 50% now. about 3 weeks ago i decided to try NO GRAINS at all, even the non-gluten kind. lo and behold, she started to improve very rapidly. we were already dairy-free at that time, and had been for at least 2 weeks. i'm not sure at this point if she is dairy or grain intolerant, or both. her acupuncturist says her body just needs strengthening. the SCD really seems to fit our needs right now and we've been following it loosely (doing no grains or sugar) for about 3 weeks now. i'm ready to commit to it fully now that i've read the book. my big question is: do i do the intro diet? my daughter does not have diarrhea, and never has. she did have some mushy stools when the eczema was at its worst, but now her stools are fine. she is not autistic. she does seem to act differently (defiant, hitting, just crazy in general) after eating dairy. i'm confused about how much of this book/diet applies to her since she doesn't have the really big issues that the diet is designed for. second question: she's been eating homemade coconut yogurt for about a month already, lots of it. do i really need to cut that out? i haven't noticed any problems with the yogurt. by the way, does anyone know if coconut yogurt (fermented 10 hours) is as good probiotics-wise as the goat yogurt? i just hope i'm not wasting my time and money making all this yogurt for nothing. thanks so much for reading my long post. i'm really excited about helping my daughter and myself get better! silvia
Guest guest
<<my big question is: do i do the intro diet? >> Yes. Everyone will get better results by starting with intro. You only need to do it for two days. You won't regret it....... really " clears the decks " and prepares the gut for healing. Be sure to progress from there to easy-to-digest foods.... all peeled and cooked fruits and veggies for a while (ripe bananas do not need to be cooked). Be sure to read up over at www.pecanbread.com for a lot more helpful tips. You can keep up the coconut yogurt..... IF you are making your own coconut milk from dried, shredded coconut. You can't use canned coconut milk. There is a recipe for SCD legal coconut milk on www.pecanbread.com in the recipe section..... and I'd imagine you just follow the instructions for one of the other nut yogurts.... it should be made the same way. You'd need to be sure you're using an SCD legal starter..... no bifidus strains, or other illegals. It probably is not *quite* as healing as the SCD goat yogurt..... but, many parents here start SCD dairy free.... and try goat yogurt a few months down the road. You can stay totally dairy free if you want to, though. Patti
Guest guest
Welcome! I did try the coconut yogurt. I made my own dried shredded coconut from a coconut. I added a little honey and legal gelatine powder, heated it to 180 ish and cooled it below room temp, just like you do for the goats yogurt. Added the progurt and incubated it for 10 hrs in my Yogourtmet. Unfortunately it all separated...and didn't turn out. It looks like you need some sort of stabilizer in the milk to make it work...I know the c. yogurt does work when you have guar gum in it. But guar gum is not legal!! You can give it a whirl...but if the milk does separate...as mine did when heated ..it might not work well. Maybe a good store bought dried shredded coconut would make a better c. milk then mine...one that doesn't separate. Good luck, Cathy Kiddos SCD aug. 2006 > > <<my big question is: do i do the intro diet? >> > > Yes. Everyone will get better results by starting with intro. You only need to do it for two days.
