Guest guest
How frustrating! With severe plagio, it should take several months to get good correction, but you should be seeing some difference after a month. Measurements would help me give you a better answer. The good news is that 5 months is the best time to start banding. Good for you catching it early! > > My daughter has been wearing her helmet for one month now. She got the helmet when she was five months old so we did start early. We had her one month check-up yesterday and she showed very little improvement (there is improvement just not much). The left side of her head is still pretty flat and her ears are still asymmetrical. I have e-mailed my orthotist for her measurements which I will post later but has anyone else with severe plagio only receive minor improvement at the one month check up? Also has anyone in the St. Louis area used Orthotics and Prosthetics Labs? >
Guest guest
We had little to no correction at 1 month but we are older. Guest guest
At 5 months you should be seeing good correction. My daughter started at that age with a starband. I would definitely take pictures of your own, since there is a chance your band isn't working. It could be that it is filling in areas that are less noticeable, but not sure. Is the band holding in the prominent areas? There should be no growth in that part. Also the band shouldn't be so loose that it can slide all over - that can be one reason it isn't effective. Ears definitely take a long time to correct - so you shouldn't be surprised not to see change there. However you should see improvement in general. If the plagio is severe and you're not seeing changes, I would definitely push the ortho for a good explanation. If he can't do that you may need to consider going elsewhere. If the band isn't fitting properly request a new one be made for free (most orthos do this if the original band isn't good). -christine sydney, 5 yrs, starband grad > > My daughter has been wearing her helmet for one month now. Guest guest
I just received the measurements from my ortho. Pre-helmet Measurements: One Month Measurements Circumference: 43 43.7 Width:12 12.3 Length:15.4 15.7 Asymmetry: 1.2 .6 CI w/I: 78.0 78.3 Can anyone tell me if these numbers are good for one month with severe plagio? My ortho said that she is showing some improvement but should it be more? Also I have not idea what these numbers mean? > > > > My daughter has been wearing her helmet for one month now. Guest guest
You are seeing improvement. The problem number here is the asymmetry, and it has gone from 12mm to 6 mm. That is good. From the numbers I would say he was moderate to begin with - not severe. Our specialist recommended banding at 10 mm or more and you were at 12 mm. 6 mm is considered mild, and you are already there. However the numbers can look different on every baby. From what you wrote previously you still see a lot of flattening, so he may look worse than some other child who measures as 6. The asymmetry measurement is the result of measuring the difference of the two diagonals of the head. Front right to back left is compared with front left to back right side. Ideally these would be the same. If the head is misshapen the measurements differ (in your case original difference was 12 mm or 1.2 cm). -christine sydney, 5 yrs, starband grad > > > > > > My daughter has been wearing her helmet for one month now.
