Guest guest
, We are about to start Valtrex, too. It can't be compounded for scd, but we're doing it anyway because of the virus situation. I guess I'd say that you need to decide if you trust your dan enough to do the antiviral even if it isn't scd lega. Ours is very scd knowledgeable, and very cautious about what she prescribes for iel. She tells us that iel really needs an antiviral drug, and I trust her. Everything that she has asked us to do so far has always helped him tremndously. I hadn't heard that the epson salts help remove heavy metals. We're chelating right now, so I'm definitely going to start trying that. I would reommend that you pull out any almond products for a time. It sounds like that's when all of the trouble started. Take out the almond butter and almond flour. You might see improvement in a day or two, or it might take a week or two to stabilize. Give it enough time for you to be able to know if it is the almonds or not. It sounds like it to me though. Meleah Week 3 into Diet - Some Problems & No Formed Stools... We started the diet on Thanksgiving for Ben, and did the intro diet for 3 days. He had his first " trophy " on Day 3, and we were so excited. Well, we eased him into the next week and started adding things slower, including the nut butters. First cashew butter, and we still had formed stool. Then almond butter. Well, ever since then we have haven't had the trophies (now about 2 weeks without one). Even the days without it, we still don't see the trophies, granted on those days he might be getting the almond flour, in the form of chicken fingers or the Digestive Wellness Almond Cookies (egg free). We started No-Fenol this week (bad issues with salicylates), as well as epsom salt baths (just 1/8 cup in bath, as he is very sensitive), and he seems to do well with both of them. We already use the activated charcoal, which our DAN doc said only use 1-2tx per week. Occassionally with the worse stools, we see bad behavior with it (used to be that way ALL THE TIME), but now MOST of the time even with the looser stools (mostly light brown/tan/gold in color) his disposition is fantastic! It's amazing. Now today he is " out of it " a bit. He seems to have gone through several " die-offs " since we started a few weeks ago...could that be the case? BRIGHT Red cheeks, silly crazy behavior, lots of spinning. The epsom salt baths seem to take away the red cheeks and calm him down considerably. It has been this past week that we have seen a lot of the red cheeks and bad behavior with it. He has bad allergies to dairy and eggs, so I made the SCD goat yogurt last night (ready for tomorrow, I hope)...would this possibly help with the looser stools? How much should I start with? I am so worried about giving it to him, with the dairy issues, but it is a different casein. We just sent off the OAT & Yeast & Culture Sensivitiy Test with Great Plains. Has anyone else done this particular test? If so, what did it tell you? We aren't doing Nystatin anymore, but Ben seems to be doing well on MCT Oil. Our new DAN doctor mentioned Dyflucan and Valtrex (Ben's viral titers are " through the roof " ) possibly. I know the risk with the liver checks, and all. Anyone else doing either of these? I guess we will see... Maybe the MCT Oil is also causing die-off? Last night he had a really BAD stool, all up his back, gold colored, much looser, and smelled like vinegar. It actually smelled like the ones we sent off for heavy metal stool tests in August, the ones that came back with very high levels of antimony (fire retardent), mercury, lead and arsenic. Hmmm, any thoughts here? We aren't detoxing heavy metals now (used to be on glutathione gel and aerosol...very hard on Ben), but I did read that the epsom salt baths pull out the metals too, right? Anyone know what the vinegar smell is???? Any ideas are much appreciated.... :-) Ben, Age
Guest guest
I agree with Meleah that almond products should be taken out. I also want the cashews out. LOL I want to warn everyone that cashews are very hard to digest.. I believe that many children with ASD should not use them in the early months of the diet....after a few months they may be used but with extreme caution.... Sometimes a regression may be delayed and happen a week or more after introducing a food that the body cannot tolerate. Please keep us updated. Mimi > , > We are about to start Valtrex, too. Guest guest
, I don't know the answers to some of your questions but I agree that you need to pull out almond flour and almond butter. If you need a nut butter (and I would stick with nut butter, not flour, for now) please use pecan butter (you'd have to make your own, I think... unless Digestive Wellness has one), hazelnut or macadamia butter. Cashews are too starchy. I would be willing to bet that you'd see far less of the red cheeks once you take almonds out. Some kids are sensitive to the phenols/salicylates in almonds. It may help a bit to use the No-Fenol enzymes.... but I just think he is obviously not ready for the almond flour texture-wise either. Patti Week 3 into Diet - Some Problems & No Formed Stools... Guest guest
Thanks Patti & Meleah! I will drop the almonds and cashews, and nut flours and see what happens. ;-))) Meleah - Please let me know (you can email me) how the valtrex goes. We are a bit behind you, and waiting on more blood tests so I am anxious to see how it goes for you. Have you seen Stan Kurtz presentation (DAN Conference Aug 2006) on the SCD Diet, Valtrex and Diflucan? It's online at www.childrenscornerschool.com, his special school. I have talked to him a few times on the phone, and he really thinks a lot of the diet and the valtrex/diflucan. He recovered his asd son, and helped some other families recover this way. Anyway, check it out if you like. And good luck! :-) :-) > > , > We are about to start Valtrex, too. It can't be compounded for scd, but we're doing it anyway because of the virus situation. Guest guest
, I will definitely check out the presentation. I will keep you posted on the Valtrex. We hope to start after the holidays, but are waiting to get either prescription coverage started up again, or the cash to pay out of pocket...which by the way is $$$, so I hope to get the coverage.
